The wish to live central city living, being close to the opportunities that a city offers result in increased developmental pressures forcing for more densification, more intensification. This trend is not only limited with the city centres anymore but infiltrate into the peripheral areas. In parallel the current moment in knowledge economy places unprecedented demands on the ways in which we live, work, learn and play. It offers many opportunities with regard to the increased densities and qualities, mix of functions and emerging synergies. Envisioning a new urban area by paying attention to the changing trends enable the creation of new patterns of living. On another hand, the notion of family living which is often associated with terrace houses with private gardens is being questioned with the emergence of associations of living. Schools as the cornerstone of community life are also changing in size, organization, functional complexity and its relationship with the outside world to assume many roles over and above that of providing conventional education. They have become important players in the community and business life. The shift in the understanding of how to manage their borders has started to offer many opportunities. The thesis argues for the possibility of having a high quality and well-resourced family environment generated by a secondary school having associations with work environment and other civic institutions and as a whole constitution of a learning quarter. Hackney has been chosen as a representation on inner periphery London in which the increasing developmental pressures are transforming into a central city living. Furthermore, Hackney Downs Park stands as a significant opportunity to question the emergence of possible associations and search for a value-based planning. Hackney Learning Quarter is an attempt to challenge such questions by proposing a design project in a 6ha area in which a secondary school, a library, a health and sports centre, workspaces and residential units provide a way of more intense and complex living as a driver of change.
