Backgrounds Despite its important role, romantic relationships can also be a cause of tensions in our lives as well. Drawing upon counselling, and evolutionary psychology literature, a set of hypotheses were developed so as to examine the effect of social media in romantic relationships. Aims The primary aim of the study was to examine the role of partners' social media use on the perceived tension in romantic relationships. Tension in romantic relationships addressed within three dimensions including perceived lack of caring, loneliness and jealousy. Methods In order to test the hypotheses, an observational study was designed. One-hundred people participate in the survey. Results The results from a series of multiple linear regressions and independent sample t-tests revealed that there was a positive association between partner's social media use and tension in all three dimensions (i.e. lack of caring, loneliness and jealousy). In addition, the moderation analyses indicated that perceived jealousy arising from their partners' social media use is lower for individuals who also use social media intensively. Contrary to the expectations, the results also revealed that individuals who have favourable attitude toward social media perceived lack of caring and jealousy relatively higher. Individuals from a collectivist culture (e.g. Turkey) perceived loneliness arising from partners' social media use higher than individual from a relative individualist culture (e.g. Britain and Europe). Lastly, female perceived jealousy higher than male. However, a statistical significance could not be found. xi Conclusion This study is important due to both its novel theoretical and empirical contribution to the existing literature.
