10 boyutta kütleli parçacıkların küçük grubu SO(9) olduğuna göre kütleli parçacık durumları, SO(9)' un indirgenemez temsillerine göre grupla- nacaktır.

A STUDY OF TYPE-II SUPERSTRING SPECTRUM SUMMARY It is known that string theory is essential for today's high energy physics. There are a few string models which are promising for the phenomenol ogy of particle physics at present day's energies. One of the principal problems in these models is to obtain their partition functions which give us the number of states which appear at each and every mass level of the mass operator. For example, the partition function of superstrings is given by OO OO 1 I TO Zss(q) = £ PssW qN = 16 n (yzL) VI _, JV=0 to=1 where q is an indeterminate and pss(N) is the number of states at Nth mass level. Its expanded form can be written as in the following: Zss(q) = £ Pss(N) qN = 16 (1 + 16 q + 144 q2 + 960 q3 iV=0 + 5264 q4 + 25056 c5 +...) Here, pss(0) (=16) is the number of massless states and pss(A^)'s are the number of massive states at each mass level M\ = N. Another problem concerning string spectrum is the classification of mas sive states in terms of irreducible representations of corresponding little groups. It is well-known that the little group of massive particles in 10 dimensions are SO(9) in the sense that at each mass level the particle states can be grouped into irreducible representations of 50(9). The first few levels can be calculated as in the following: viii. Ml=0 R- 5(0)® 5(0) = 10X8)5(0) (16). M2R=1 : 5(1) <8) 5(0) = 1(7! >® 5(0) 5(0)0 5(1) = |0>®5(1) (256). Ml=2 : 5(2) ® 5(0) = (12a! > ©|<7i > 9| 0 > ) ® 5(0) 5(1)® 5(1) = |(7i >® 5(1) 5(0) ® 5(2) = | 0 > ® 5(2) (2304). M\=Z 5(3) ® 5(0) = (|3<7i > 0|2(7i > 02 \ax > ®\a2 > © | 0 > ) ® 5(0) 5(2) ® 5(1) = (|2o-i > eki > 9| 0 > ) ® 5(1) 5(1)® 5(2) = |<n >®5(2) 5(0) ® 5(3) = | 0 > ® 5(3) (15360) To this end, we find useful to define for each and every irreducible repre sentation V(A) of SO(9), the branching functions D(A)' =qNo{A)Y^C(A,N)q N ^1,-iv; q JV=0 where C(A,N) is the number of V(A) occuring at mass level M\ = N + Nq(A) and İV0(A) is the corresponding threshold at which the rep resentation V(A) first appear in the spectrum. For any representation of V(A) = V(ii\i + «2^2 + ^3-^3 + ^2 A4), the branching functions can be rewritten as the following generalized form: £>(iıAı +İ2X2 +İ3X3 +Ü 2A4) = J2 C(A,N) q(N-^-3 ^-6 J3-io f4)_ ixWe have calculated some of these branching functions up to 50th level. This could be a tedious task but our results is somewhat surprising. Some examples of these branching functions can be given as in the following: D(0) = l-q + qi + q6 + 2q8 + 3q10 + q11 + 6q12 + 2q13 + 9ç14 + 6<?15 + 16c16 + llq17 + 27q18 + 22c19 + 46c20 + 42c21 + 76q22 + 77q23 + 132c24 + 136c25 + 218c26 + 243c27 + 368c28 + 418c29 + 615c30 + 716c31 + 1022c32 + 1215c33 + 1687?34 + 2039c35 + 2785c36 + 3387g37 + 4555c38 + 5601c39 + 7431c40 + 9174c41 + 12057c42 + 14946c43 + 19470c44 + 24207c45 + 31287c46 + 38973c47 + 50085c48 + 62416c49 + 79778c50 +... D(Ai) = 1 + qA + q5 + 2qe + 2q7 + 4=q8 + 4ç9 + 7ç10 + 8c11 + 14<?12 + 16c13 + 25c14 + 31?15 + 47ç16 + 58ç17 + 85c18 + 107c19 + 153ç20 + 195ç21 + 271?22 + 348c23 + 480c24 + 616c25 + 834c26 + 1077c27 + 1445c28 + 1863c29 + 2478c30 + 3194c31 + 4216c32 + 5431c33 + 7118c34 + 9158c35 + 11942c36 + 15330c37 + 19885c38 + 25488c39 + 32919c40 + 42097c41 + 54155c42 + 69109c43 + 88582c44 + 112803c45 + 144100c46 + 183102c47 + 233208c48 + 295677c49 +... D(A2) = 1 + q2 + 2q4 + q5 + 4g6 + 3ç7 + 8q8 + 7qg + 15c10 + 15c11 + 29ç12 + 31c13 + 54g14 + 62ç15 + 101ç16 + 120ç17 + 186ç18 + 227ç19 + 339ç20 + 422ç21 + 610ç22 + 770ç23 + 1090ç24 + 1387?25 + 1924ç26 + 2464ç27 + 3370ç28 + 4329ç29 + 5850ç30 + 7527ç31 + 10071ç32 + 12966ç33 + 17200ç34 + 22141g35 + 29166?36 + 37508ç37 + 49100ç38 + 63067ç39 + 82119ç40 + 105306c41 + 136468c42 + 174689c43 + 225425c44 + 288011c45 + 370233c46 + 472081c47 +...It would be useful here to consider some ratios of these branching func tions rather than the above expressions. For instance, let us consider -D(Ai) = l + q + q2 + q3 + q*+q5+qS + q? + q*+qS+qT + q 11 D(0) + g12 + g13 + g14 + ç15 + ç16 + q17 + ç18 + g19 + g20 + ç21 + g22 + g23 + g24 + q25 + q26 + q27 + g28 + g29 + g30 + g31 + q32 + q33 + g34 + 2ç35 + 2g36 + 3g37 + 4g38 + 6g39 + 8g40 + 12g41 + 16ç42 + 23ç43 + 30ç44 + 40g45 + 51g46 + 67g47 + 83g48 + 105ç49 +... = 7^-^ + q35 (l + q + 2q2 + 3ç3 + 5g4 + 7q5 + lig6 + 15ç7 (i -q) + 22ç8 + 29ç9 + 39ç10 + 50c11 + 66ç12 + 82g13 + 104g14 +...). It is seen that this ratio is a geometric series up to 35th order and for subsequent orders the terms fit in general another power series. This gives us the possibility to write a branching function D(A) as in the following form: Z)(A)=po(ç,A)?c(0'A) + PıfoA)^1^ + p2(q,A)q«2>V+... where, for i=0, 1, 2,..., £>i(g,A)' s are some infinite power series and c(i,A)'s are their corresponding periods of order i. For example, we find the ratio D(A2) = 1 + q + 2q2 + 2g3 + 3g4 + 3ç5 + 4g6 + 4g7 + 5g8 + 5ç 9 + 6<z10 + 6gn + 7g12 + 7g13 + 8g14 + 8g15 + 9g16 + 9g17 + 10g1£ + 10ç19 + lig20 + lig21 + 12g22 + 12g23 + 13g24 + 14g25 + 15g26 + 16g27 + 18g28 + 20g29 + 23g30 + 27ç31 + 32g32 + 38g33 + 46g34 + 56g35 + 68g36 + 84g37 + 102g38 + 125g39 + 152g40 + 185g41 + 223g42 + 270g43 + 323g44 + 386ç45 + 458g46 + 541g47 +... x+ q25 (1 + q + 2ql + 3q* + 5g4 + 7q5 + l1q (l-q)(l-q*) + 15c7 + 21q8 + 28c9 + 38g10 + 49c11 + 65c12 + 82c13 + 105c14 + 131c15 + 164c16 + 201c17 + 248g18 + 300g19 + 363c20 + 434c21 + 517g22 +...) for V(X2). By calculating the ratios between all branching functions, one can see that zeroth order periods are equal one and first order periods are obtained as in the following: c(l,0) = 45 c(l,ni Ai) = 35, n1 > 0 c(l,rci Xi + n2 A2) = 25, n2 > 0 c(l,rai Ai + n2 A2 + n3 A3) = 15, n3 > 0 c(l,ni Ai + n2 A2 + n3 A3 + n4 2 A4) = 5, ra4 > 0 Let us define the following function: 1 ^ = 1_1 (l-?2fc)fc-l (l_ç2fc-l) -1U-2 Using this function, the branching function of V(0) is given by D(0) = ip(q) + q^(l + q' + q* + 3qi + 3q5 +...) Thus, for any B4 irreducible representation, we can write the power series corresponding to zeroth order as in what follows: xiip0(g,nAı +mA2 + kA3 + l 2A4) = n 1 m 1 S: 1 J H (1-g'O.11 (l-qia).11 (1-?İ3) H (l-o^) »1 = 1 V * y «2 = 1 V * y «3=1 V * ' «4 = 1 V ' 11 (1 _ gn+l+ii) 11 (1 _ Çm+1+İ2) 11 (1 _ gfc+l+ja) n ı n î 11 n _ gn+m+2+sTj 11 Q _ qm+k+2+s2\ m X k X «1 X 11 (I _ çn+m+fc+3+r) ^J id-« Finally, we study relation between branching functions and string func tions of affine Lie algebra B\. The usual expectation is to obtain these branching functions to be in relation with B\ string functions. The branching functions that we present in our work do not seem however to be related with affine string funtions. This naturally brings out the possibility that there is another symmetry algebra which underlies the string spectrum. This possibility has been emphasized by several au thors, such as Gursey, Witten and Julia, for Hyperbolic Lie Algebras. We finally remark that the string functions of affine Kac-Moody algebras are not expected to be rich so as to satisfy the variety presented by the branching functions which we introduce in this work. xiii
