Özet (Çeviri)
This dissertation is an exploration of two contemporary British fictions, written by two British Caribbean female writers: Zadie Smith's White Teeth and Andrea Levy's Small Island. The main aim is to reveal how first- and second-generation Bangladeshi and Jamaican immigrants, and their sense of belonging to the multicultural homeland (London) is shaped in the face of Englishness. In particular, the aims of this dissertation are supported by the theories of postcolonial critical theorist Homi Bhabha and cultural theorist Stuart Hall. During the colonial era, the European (the master) and the native encountered each other in the contact zone, and the native was encouraged by the European to mimic the European's culture and religion. As a result, the native effectively developed a hybrid personality at those times. In these two novels (contemporary), in the post-war period, from Britain's former colonies (Bangladesh and Jamaica), the characters immigrate to the mother country, which is England, with utopian dreams. However, they are faced with oppression, discrimination and inequality. The hybrid identity reveals itself again when they encounter white society and have diasporic experiences in the multicultural space, which Bhabha calls the third space. The Bangladeshi and Jamaican immigrant characters feel the sense of unbelonging and unhomeliness, positioned in an in-betweenness (between England and Jamaica or Bangladesh) in the face of Englishness in the mother country.
