Özet
Ego'nun kurulumu ve felsefenin temel konularından biri haline gelmesi felsefe tarihçileri tarafından Descartes'la başlatılır, ancak öncesinde de benzer düşüncelere rastlanmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, ego'nun kurulumunun, aslında Descartes'la başlamayıp, Augustinus'ta da benzer bir düşünme biçimine rastlanacağını göstermektir. Bunu yaparken Batı felsefe geleneği, Antik Yunan halk inancından felsefecilere kadar kendilik konusu incelenmiştir. Homeros, Platon, Aristoteles, Epikourosçuluk, Stoacılık ve Plotinos'un ruh ve zihin kavramları kendilik düşüncesi çerçevesinde incelenmiştir. Bu geleneğin mirası olan metafizik, Augustinus tarafından Hristiyan inancına uyarlanmıştır ve böylece ortaya felsefe ve teolojinin birleşimi bir düşünce sistemi ortaya çıkmıştır. Nihayetinde Descartes, Aristotelesçi skolastik felsefeye karşı bir metafizik aradığında, Augustinus'tan bu metafiziği alıp içinden teolojik kavramları çıkararak özne temelli yeni bir felsefe kurmuştur. Bu çalışma boyunca, iki filozof arasındaki farklar ve benzerlikler gösterilerek, Descartes'ın yeni özne temelli felsefesinin köklerinin Augustinus'a uzandığı gösterilmeye çalışılmıştır.

The establishment of the ego and its becoming one of the main subjects of philosophy are started by philosophy historians with Descartes, but similar thoughts are encountered before. The aim of this study is to show that the establishment of the ego do not actually start with Descartes, but a similar way of thinking will be found in Augustine. While doing this, the concept of the self in the tradition of Western philosophy was examined from Ancient Greek folk belief to the philosophers. The concepts of soul and mind of Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Epicureanism, Stoicism and Plotinus were examined within the framework of self. Metaphysics, which is the legacy of this tradition, was adapted to the Christian faith by Augustine, and thus a system of thought that combined philosophy and theology emerged. Ultimately, when Descartes sought a metaphysics against Aristotelian scholastics, he took these metaphysics from Augustine and removed theological concepts and established a new philosophy based on the self. Throughout this study, it has been tried to show that the roots of Descartes' new self-based philosophy go back to Augustine by showing the differences and similarities between the two philosophers.
