Özet (Çeviri)

This thesis focuses on the role of the hashtag #darbeyehayir (NoCoup) during the 15th July 2016 coup attempt and the following anti-coup protests in Turkey. Drawing upon the theories of hashtag activism and affective publics and using a mixed-methods approach that brings together content analysis and semi-structured interviews, the study explores how the hashtag was used for mobilisation and news streaming purposes. It also explores how and why the hashtag's most prominent users relied on Twitter during the events. While existing research has explored social media practices during the coup attempt, little is known about the role played by Twitter hashtags, with this thesis offering the first in-depth examination to address this gap. The thesis argues that #darbeyehayir played an important role in calling citizens to participate in the protests and in providing support for the Turkish government during the coup. The findings show that tweeters applied specific interpretive frames – such as unity and solidarity, nationality and democracy – to encourage citizens to join the protests. They also show that the hashtag played a primary role in news streaming dynamics, with tweeters frequently sharing information by blending emotions and opinions about the events. The thesis discusses evidence of disinformation, including manipulated and fabricated content spread through the hashtag, and how prominent hashtag users relied on what they perceived as 'official accounts' while live tweeting and retweeting critical aspects of the protests. The thesis advances our knowledge of the role of Twitter, in particular hashtags, as a means of building coalitions in support of a government.
