Özet

Objective: Several studies on ADHD in children have concentrated on either cultural difference in parenting or the relationship between parenting styles and ADHD, rather than making a comparison for the impacts of their communication. This study aims to analyze the general relationship between parenting styles, and the difference between UK and HK mothers' child rearing practices. Also, the present study aims to discover that whether there is any relation between the parenting practices and ADHD symptoms in preschoolers. Methods: The association between 'parenting styles' and 'ADHD symptoms' in total 112 children and mother dyads – 55 of these were from UK, and 57 were from HK, between 3.08 and 5.01 years of age preschoolers were examined, controlling for ADHD symptoms in children and parenting styles of mothers, through the group comparison analysis, overall correlation analysis and correlation analysis by UK and HK groups. Findings: The result of the study suggests that mothers from HK, when compared to mothers from UK, stated higher ADHD symptoms for their pre-school children. Also, HK mothers had higher scores in total Authoritarian parenting style and its' subscales compared to UK mothers. In contrast, HK mothers' scores of Authoritative - warm parenting sub-scale were lower than UK mothers. Overall, in mothers' report on ADHD symptoms, there was a positive correlation between ADHD symptoms of pre-school children and total authoritarian, authoritarian - physical coercion, authoritarian - verbal hostility, permissive parenting style. However, no significant relation between parenting styles and teachers' report on ADHD symptoms were found in terms of UK sample. Additionally, there was no significant correlation between mothers' parenting styles and pre-school children's ADHD symptoms in both reported by mothers and teachers for HK sample. Conclusions: There is a correlation between parenting styles and children's ADHD symptoms which has different characteristics across different cultures. Both mothers and teachers from HK have higher ADHD symptom scores for pre-school children's 6 ADHD symptoms in comparison to mothers and teachers from UK. However, no significant correlation had been found between mothers' parenting styles and preschool children's ADHD symptoms in both reported by mothers and teachers for HK sample, while a positive correlation has been found between UK mothers' authoritarian and permissive parenting styles and their children's increased ADHD symptoms.
