Özet

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of cross-language activation during bilingual lexical processing, and underlying cognitive processes. Main objects of this study as follows: a) To investigate cross-language activation in bilinguals and to examine how this activation varies according to the proficiency levels of the participants; b) To examine whether Inhibitory Control Capacity and Working Memory Performance determine the cross-language activation; c) To examine whether the Inhibitory Control Capacity and Working Memory Performance of bilinguals differ according to the level of proficiency in the L2. Methods: Participants performed the Reading Span Task, Translation Recognition Task and Stroop Task respectively. Their proficiency level was determined based on their results on the Lexical Test for Advanced Learners of English (LexTALE) developed by Lemhöfer & Broersma (2012). In the translation recognition task, participants saw the English and Turkish words presented one after the other and they decided whether these two words are translation equivalents of each other. The translation pairs in the critical conditions were not translation equivalents in this task. For example, for translation equivalents such as soap-sabun, critical distractors included (a) orthographically similar to the English word (e.g., soap-sopa), (b) orthographically similar to the correct Turkish translation (soap-saban), or (c) semantically related to the correct Turkish translation (soap-hamam); and included an unrelated condition (soap-karga). Working memory performance was measured with the Reading Span Task, and Inhibitory Control Capacity was measured with the Stroop Task. Results: All participants, regardless their proficiency were significantly less accurate and their response time were significantly slower for the semantic neighbour condition. Less proficient participants were significantly less accurate for semantic neighbour conditions and for response time, they were significantly slower for semantic neighbour and translation neighbour condition. Participants with better inhibitory control capacity and working memory performance experienced more interference in the semantic neighbour condition. There was no significant difference between participants with different proficiency for the Stroop Task and for the Reading Span Task. Conclusion: The results of the present study supported the prediction of RHM that the translation equivalent in L1 is active in the early stages of L2 learning. Moreover, the fact that all participants show interference for the semantic neighbor condition revealed that all participants are sensitive to conceptual information regardless of their proficiency.
