Özet (Çeviri)
The treatment of the critical or taboo content in the ELT materials has attracted the attention of many researchers (Arıkan, 2005; Sokolik, 2007; Kullman as cited in Harwood, 2014; Gray, 2002, 2013; Wajnryb as cited in Gray, 2002; Cunningsworth, 1995; Masuhara, Hann, and Yi, 2008; Thornbury, 1999). However, those studies mostly focused on commercially produced global coursebooks or the views of the publishers and material writers included in the production of those coursebooks. Considering that there are also locally produced in-house ELT materials used to supplement these coursebooks in terms of content, there seems to be a gap in the literature regarding the studies investigating how CITs (Controversial issues and taboos) or other critical issues are treated in the ELT materials produced in a local culture along with values and belief systems of the material writers which are reflected in the materials. In an attempt to fill this void in the literature, this study aims to investigate if and how CITs are treated in the locally produced ELT materials designed for the preparatory school of a public university in Turkey. Moreover, it intends to analyze the views, perceptions, experiences, and practices of the material writer regarding the use of CITs in the materials s/he produced. More specifically, the present study focuses on how the values and views of the material writer are reflected in the materials and the underlying reasons behind any exclusion of CITs in the in-house materials. The qualitative research methodology is adopted in this study. The necessary data were collected via document analysis on the in-house ELT materials prepared at a public university in central Turkey and a semi-structured interview was conducted with the material writer. The findings revealed that the issues stated as taboo by many researchers and material writers were also mentioned as sensitive topics by the material writer. The results also showed that the materials under evaluation reflected the views of the material writer regarding CITs as those issues are barely visible in 2 the ELT materials and even if they are touched upon, they mostly lack a critical approach due to various reasons or restrictions considered by the material writers.
