Özet (Çeviri)

Eating Disorders (ED) are characterized by persistent disturbances in individuals' eating and eating related behaviours and concerns (Fairburn & Harrison, 2003). In addition to the adverse psychological, physical, and psychosocial outcomes, ED constitute the most debilitative and lethal condition among all mental disorders (Arcelus et al., 2011). Therefore, establishing comprehensive and effective treatment approaches becomes more of an issue. Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) constitutes a comprehensive treatment for complex mental health problems (Linehan, 1993). Emotion regulation skills are located in the centre of the treatment. Although previous literature has provided promising results (Bankoff et al., 2012), the effectiveness of DBT in ED has not been established yet. The present study is an attempt to review the effect of DBT on dysfunctional eating behaviours (i.e., binge eating, purging, excessive exercise) and thoughts (i.e., weight and shape concerns), as well as other psychological, physiological and psychosocial impairments in individuals with eating disorders. For the current review study, five databases (EBSCO, MEDLINE, PsycInfo, Pubmed, and ScienceDirect) were searched and the results were presented in a narrative synthesis format. The main findings of the study indicate that DBT is an effective treatment in diminishing dysfunctional eating behaviours and concerns. In terms of other psychological, physiological and psychosocial outcomes related to eating disorder psychopathology, the review indicates promising results. Due to the mixed findings, the effectiveness of DBT on other related outcomes such as emotion regulation capacity or day to day functioning could not be established. The results were discussed in the light of the literature and implications were derived
