Green bonds were born by the European Investmen Bank's effort in 2007. At the beginning the first green bond was called as“Climate Awareness Bond”as a structured bond with proceeds dedicated to attract investor's attention into climate issues. The aim was to find a solution by going between financial markets and climate change issues in order to financial environmental friendly projects, as called green projects. Green projects finance renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable water management, pollution prevention, protecting biodiversity projects, water management etc. to limit the temperature increase to 2 ◦C above pre-industrial levels. That is for this reason, green bonds were born. During last five years, there is a significant growth in green bond market. That is why, this study will research one of the main reasons for this growth by analysing investor's motivation and behaviour. By looking those aspects, then the main question“can be green bond an alternative to regular bond?”will be responded. For this aim, it has been used motivational theory of Maslow, Herzberg, Adam and Vroom. And it has been supposed that the green bonds as a CSR or SRI acitivites then the question is investigated in three pillars which are sustainability, legitimacy and profitability. Then the survey has been sent to about 50 investors and 11 of them responded. Main population of investors is based on European investors; Nord, East and West. It has been asked totally 10 questions in that survey to classfiy their responses in three pillars and to find which pillar is the most significant factor for investing in green bond in their point of view. The results showed that the sustainabililty is the principal concern for European investors in the context of green bond. Then legitimacy is the second important pillar. However, the results show that European investors have no expectation of financial return about green bonds. In the conclusion, it will be shown by the results of the survey that not today but in very longterm future, green bond can be an alternative to regular bonds.
