Since the late 20th century, interest in the writings of trauma survivors has increased dramatically. Under the rubric of the interdisciplinary area of trauma studies, a substantial critical literature on trauma, memory, and representation has emerged to further an understanding of this issue. It is the purpose of this paper to introduce an art historical perspective to trauma studies through a critical investigation of Atrabiliarios (1992–2004) by Colombian artist Doris Salcedo. Atrabiliarios is an installation that consists of worn female shoes placed in niches that are sealed with surgical thread and translucent membranes made of cow bladder—an artistic representation of political killings and disappearances that took place during the Colombian Civil War in the 1960s. With its sculptural adaptation of domestic objects, Atrabiliarios offers a multimodal representation of loss and memory while eschewing pain imagery in artworks that deal with trauma. This study of Atrabiliarios regarding the representation of traumatic memories through melancholia reveals that the shoes on display evoke languages of sense memory that function across intersubjective boundaries and fold back into social memory.
