The emergence of social networking sites along with the development of digital technologies, have provided interactive and fast communication possibilities, triggering actions mediated by digital technologies, and have positively affected the mobilisation of social movements. Furthermore, social media has become a source of news by allowing people to receive and distribute news themselves. This situation has also facilitated the dissemination of fake news. This study analyses the Gezi Park Protests, which occurred in Turkey in 2013, to examine the relationship between these two facts, caused by social media: one of them is positive and the other is negative. During these protests, social networking sites, especially Twitter, were used extensively for the mobilisation of demonstrations. In addition, fake news disseminated by social media came into prominence during these protests. This study analyses the most-shared fake news on social media during the Gezi Park Protests, by utilising discourse analysis and argues that fake news was used as a mobilisation tool during these demonstrations. This study reveals that the fabricated, misleading, and manipulated content, which are forms of fake news, were used as a tool in the mobilisation of protests and influenced the public's perception through a provocative discourse.
