This dissertation examines the structural and cultural changes which arose with the establishment of the Uzbek Khanate by Shaybani Khan in the early If?1 century in Central Asia. With the conquests of Mawarannahr, Khorezm, and Khurasan, Shaybani Khan, grandson ofAbulkhayir Khan, from the line ofChinggis Khan and his Uzbek tribesmen, brought an end to Timurid rule and laid the foundations of Uzbek Khanate. The first and second chapters of this dissertation present the process of the formation of Mawarannahr-Uzbek khanate by focusing on the life and political career of Shaybani Khan, its founder. An important part of the second chapter is devoted to an understanding of the political vision he projected and the rhetoric he used for his audiences of both nomadic and sedentary backgrounds. Coming from the steppe regions to the urban centers of Central Asia, Shaybani Khan and the Uzbeks brought about an integration between the political culture of the Uzbek tribes and the political and cultural elements of the sedentary regions. This integration led to a metamorphosis in the culture and identity both of the Uzbeks and the sedentary peoples. A new political structure arose out of the confrontation between the political ideals, values, institutions of the steppe and those of the settled regions of284 Central Asia. The third chapter of the dissertation describes this new Uzbek political culture and political order. The Uzbeks brought Chinggisid political symbols and traditions into Mawarannahr in a new form characterized by ideals of power sharing and the limitation of power. In this system the Shibanid dynastic clans emerged as interdependent but autonomous units. The fourth and the fifth chapters deal with the question of how cultural and political elements of the sedentary regions took part in this new political order. The Uzbek political order, which encouraged regionalization and local policy making institutions in both political and cultural affairs, enabled the representatives of local people in the sedentary regions to share power with the Uzbeks in this new political system. In the early Mr century, political life in the Uzbek khanate revolved around the balance established among different partners who shared power. While the Shibanid-Uzbek state in general appears to have been fragile, the system was, in fact, flexible, effective and displayed remarkable durability.
