Özet
Cyprus question is a phenomenon which has been discussed for many decades now. The roots of this issue date back to the imperial times where two societies namely the Turkish Cypriots and the Greek Cypriots have developed threat perceptions against each other under the colonial rule. Their identity, which they once defined as“Cypriot”was changed as“Turkish Cypriot”and“Greek Cypriot”in order to mark the separation and division not only in their society but also in their minds, hearts and souls. This division, which was inherited as a reminder of the colonial rule, has shaped the demographics and politics of the island since then. Today many theories have been put forth in order to explain the lack of a settlement on the island even after half a century. This thesis argues that if it was a mere ethnic conflict so many different actors from different parts of the world such as the U.S.A., the UK, the UN, the EU, Greece and Turkey would not be still involved with the island. Cyprus, enjoying a geographical proximity to important countries in the region, was once defined as“an unsinkable aircraft carrier”. This definition explains perfectly why there still has not been a settlement on the island. Thus this thesis solely focuses on the role of foreign interference in the Cyprus question, an aspect, which has not been analyzed adequately in the Cypriot community until now. With the aid of this study it is demonstrated to what extent foreign interference can alter the course of events in a country.
