Özet

Parent – child interaction is a critical pillar of child development. One of the foundational components of this interaction is parents' child rearing style as a set of core behaviors and attitudes which are repeated infinitely from the birth of the child. Purpose of this study is to investigate relationship of parenting styles and adolescent behavioral problems. Relationship of parental authoritativeness and externalizing / internalizing problems, and relationship of individual aspects of authoritativeness (accepting and involvement, psychological autonomy, and control and supervision) and externalizing / internalizing problems are studied. Analyses showed that authoritative parenting has a significant negative correlation with both internalizing and externalizing problems. Also, there are significant differences in externalizing and internalizing problems between participants with high authoritative parents and participants with low authoritarian parents. However, individual analysis of aspects indicated that not all aspects are significantly related to both internalizing or externalizing. Only accepting and involved parenting style had a significant relationship with and effect on both internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems. Results are also reiterated within gender groups. It was found that there is a main effect of gender in internalizing problems and female adolescents had significantly more internalizing problems. Also, there is an interaction effect of gender in relationship of accepting and involved parenting and externalizing such that male adolescents' externalizing were more responsive to accepting and involved parenting.
