Özet
Bu doktora tezi, uzaktan eğitimde transaksiyonel uzaklık algısının öğrenci başarıları ve memnuniyetini etkileyebileceği bağlamında, sohbet robotu kullanımının bu algıyı azaltma potansiyelini incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Transaksiyonel uzaklık, öğrenci ile öğretim elemanı arasındaki iletişim ve etkileşimin niteliği ve niceliği ile ilgili bir konsepttir. Uzaktan eğitimde transaksiyonel uzaklığı azaltmak için çeşitli araçlar benimsenmektedir. Bu tezde, IBM Watson Assistant ile geliştirilen“YakınDost”adlı sohbet robotu kullanılmıştır. Bu sohbet robotu, doğal dil işleme teknolojisi ile öğrencilerin ders, ödev, öğretim elemanı, sınav, teknik arıza gibi konulardaki sıkça sorulan sorularını cevaplayabilmektedir. Tez, öntest-son test kontrol grubu deseniyle kurgulanmış ve kullanılan ölçeklerin güvenilirlik değerleri dikkate alınmıştır. Veri toplama aşamasında, bir devlet üniversitesindeki birinci sınıf öğrencilere güz döneminin başında ve sonunda“Transaksiyonel Uzaklık Algısı Ölçeği”online olarak uygulanmıştır. Ayrıca, dönem ortasında öğrencilere YakınDost sohbet robotunun linki gönderilmiş ve“Sohbet Robotu Kullanılabilirlik Ölçeği'ne”katılmaları istenmiştir. Toplamda, 2000 öğrenci veri toplama araçlarına katılmıştır. Veri analizi, hem ön-test hem de son-test ölçeklerini tamamlayan 583 öğrenciye odaklanmış ve bu öğrencilerin 398'i sohbet robotuyla etkileşime geçmiştir. Verilerin analizi sonucunda, YakınDost sohbet robotunun kullanımının öğrencilerin transaksiyonel uzaklık algılarını anlamlı derecede azalttığı bulunmuştur. Bu tez, eğitimciler ile öğrenciler arasındaki iletişimi ve etkileşimi artırmak için teknolojik yenilikleri kullanmanın önemini vurgulamaktadır. Eğitim alanındaki gelişmelerle birlikte, bu çalışma, öğrencilerin ve eğitimcilerin uzaktan öğrenme uygulamalarını sürekli olarak geliştirmelerine katkı sağlayacak daha fazla keşif yapılmasını teşvik etmektedir.

This doctoral thesis aims to investigate the potential of reducing transactional distance perception through the use of a chatbot in the context of distance education and its potential impact on student achievements and satisfaction. Transactional distance is a concept related to the quality and quantity of communication and interaction between students and instructors. Various tools are adopted to mitigate transactional distance in distance education. In this thesis, a chatbot named“YakınDost,”developed with IBM Watson Assistant, was utilized. This chatbot employs natural language processing technology to respond to frequently asked questions regarding courses, assignments, instructors, exams, technical issues, and other related topics. The thesis was structured using a pre-test post-test control group design, and the reliability values of the employed scales were taken into consideration. During the data collection phase, the“Transactional Distance Perception Scale”was administered online to first-year students at the beginning and end of the fall semester in a state university. Additionally, midway through the semester, students were sent the link to the YakınDost chatbot and asked to participate in the“Chatbot Usability Scale.”In total, 2000 students engaged with the data collection instruments. Data analysis focused on 583 students who completed both pre-test and post-test surveys, and out of these, 398 students interacted with the chatbot. The analysis of the data revealed that the use of the YakınDost chatbot significantly reduced students' transactional distance perceptions. This thesis underscores the importance of employing technological innovations to enhance communication and interaction between educators and students. In conjunction with advancements in the field of education, this study encourages further exploration to contribute to continuous improvement in remote learning practices for both students and educators.
