This study focuses on shadowing as a propaedeutic exercise in simultaneous interpreting training. For many years, trainers have prepared students for simultaneous interpreting by employing shadowing (Arjona, 1978; Longley, 1978). The discourse surrounding the use of shadowing extended to the point of it being proposed as an entry criterion for students, and numerous researchers have proposed various forms of shadowing. Over the past 60 years, there have been many approaches to comparing shadowing and simultaneous interpreting and these have generated numerous discussions. Most studies have focused on a direct comparison between shadowing and simultaneous interpreting, but some studies have taken a more multifaceted and complex approach, and included listening, paraphrasing, consecutive interpreting, or variables such as speed, training, and accent. Starting from the assumption that the effects of shadowing and simultaneous interpreting differ in terms of mental effort, this study proposes two new shadowing exercises (i.e. shadowing with subtitles, shadowing the interpreter). Shadowing has the advantages of making students speak and listen at the same time, and use their short-term memory when following the speaker, but it has the disadvantage of being a monolingual practice. In contrast, simultaneous interpreting calls for speaking in one language while listening in another, requiring higher cognitive load management and advanced multitasking skills to process and convey information. Thus, the recommended exercises are meant to advance and acquaint students with speaking in one language while listening to another. In the first suggested exercise (i.e. shadowing with subtitles), students are expected to follow the target text on the screen (visual stimulus) and vocalize it while listening to the source text (auditory stimulus). In the second (i.e. shadowing the interpreter), students are expected to listen to the source text and the target text at the same time (auditory stimulus) while shadowing the interpreter. Three primary methods are used to evaluate mental effort (Eggemeier, 1988): psychophysiological, subjective and performance-based methods. To gather data on mental effort, psychophysiological approaches use physiological findings such heart rate variability, eye activity and/or changes in the brain, while subjective methods rely on rating scales based on participants' experiences (Paas et al., 1994: 442). Since 1981, eye tracking has been one of the psychophysiological methods used in interpreting studies (see McDonald and Carpenter, 1981). Eye tracking during process monitoring is regarded more cost-effective and is considered to have greater ecological validity than other psychophysiological techniques such as electroencephalography or positron emission tomography (Seeber, 2013). Bearing in mind the eye tracking's advantages, this study utilizes an eye tracker measuring participants' pupil dilation to assess the effects of shadowing exercises and simultaneous interpreting on mental effort. The study also considered stress as a moderating variable and examined its effect on pupil dilation. Pupil changes are acknowledged as markers of mental load; however, the pupil can also respond to other factors, such as stress or environmental conditions, therefore it was ensured that every participant experienced the same ambient circumstances during the experiment. Keeping in mind the possible effect of stress on pupil dilation, a pre-test was designed to examine its impact, and stress levels were considered as a moderating variable. The study also measured the effect of participants' stress and mental effort on text comprehension, in view of the reported negative effect of shadowing on text comprehension. Finally, based on the assumption of a possible difference between measured and perceived mental effort, participants were asked to complete a self-assessment questionnaire. In this study, conducted with 16 participants, the eye tracker data showed significant differences in pupil size between the two exercises, shadowing and shadowing with subtitles. Similarly, a significant difference was found between shadowing and simultaneous interpreting. However, no significant difference was observed between shadowing and shadowing the interpreter, suggesting their similar effects on the participants. Statistical analyses revealed no statistical relationship between stress and pupil size, or between stress and the number of correct answers in the text comprehension test. Regarding the relationship between task difficulty and text comprehension, although there was no statistically significant relationship between these variables, a significantly higher number of correct answers was found in simultaneous interpreting compared to shadowing exercises, in line with the studies in the literature. To better understand the efficacy of these exercises, future studies are recommended to employ a larger sample size, apply the suggested exercises in various language pairs and in different interpreting directions, and compare different experimental groups.
