Kazılar sırasında Newton'a eşlik eden ekibin, elde edilen sonuçlardaki göz ardı edilemeyecek etkisine dikkat çekilir. British Museum'da sergilemeye değer eski eserlerin toplanması amacına yönelik olarak hareket eden Newton'ın faaliyetlerinin“bilimsel arkeolojik kazı”nitelemesine uygunluğu tartışılır. Aynı zamanda Newton'ın eski eserlerin aidiyeti konusundaki fikirleri ve onun Osmanlı toplumunun eski eser bilinç ya da bilinçsizliğine dair gözlemleri/iddiaları tartışılır. 1861-1886 yılları arasında British Museum Yunan ve Roma Eserleri Küratörü olan Newton'ın Osmanlı Devleti topraklarında sürdürülen muhtelif kazıları yönlendirmesiyle Osmanlı arkeolojisinin gelişimindeki rolü tartışılır. Newton'ın A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus and Branchıdae ve Travels and Discoveries in the Levant adlı eserleri bağlamında Newton'ın Osmanlı toplumuna ve yöneticilerine dair görüşleri incelenerek 19. yüzyıl Osmanlı toplumu portresine katkı yapılır.
Özet (Çeviri)
This study examines the life of British archaeologist Sir Charles Thomas Newton (1816–1894), his archaeological excavations in Ottoman lands and his impact on Ottoman archaeology. The study primarily focuses on the legal aspects of Newton's excavations and the permits he obtained between 1854 and 1859 in Kalymnos, Halicarnassus, Knidos, and Didyma. It explores the attitudes of Ottoman central and provincial authorities towards antiquities, ranging from“indifference”to“ownership,”as they either resisted or permitted Newton's excavations, which were conducted under permits obtained through his diplomatic connections at a time when antiquities regulations were not yet in force in the Ottoman Empire. Additionally, the study highlights the indispensable role of Newton's excavation team in the outcomes of these excavations. It questions whether Newton's activities, which were aimed at collecting antiquities worthy of display in the British Museum, align with the definition of“scientific archaeological excavation.”Furthermore, it discusses Newton's views on the ownership of antiquities and his observations or claims regarding the Ottoman society's awareness or lack thereof of antiquities. As the Curator of Greek and Roman Antiquities at the British Museum from 1861 to 1886, Newton played a role in directing various excavations carried out in Ottoman territories, contributing to the development of Ottoman archaeology. Through an analysis of his works, A History of Discoveries at Halicarnassus, Cnidus and Branchidae and Travels and Discoveries in the Levant, the study examines Newton's perspectives on Ottoman society and its rulers, offering insights into the portrayal of 19th century Ottoman Society.
