Özet
Bu çalışma, Osmanlı dönemi kitap sanatlarının önemli bir unsuru olan rumi motifinin, Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi Kütüphanesi'nde yer alan seçili yazma eserlerin kitap kapakları üzerindeki kompozisyonlarını incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır. Rumi motifi, İslam sanatında figüratif anlatımın sınırlı olması nedeniyle gelişen süsleme anlayışının karakteristik bir ögesidir. Özellikle tezhip ve cilt sanatlarında hem estetik hem de sembolik yönleriyle öne çıkan bu motif, zamanla stilize edilerek geleneksel Türk süsleme sanatlarında geniş bir kullanım alanı bulmuştur. Çalışma kapsamında, muhtelif yayınlardan tezyinli ciltler tespit edilmiştir. Topkapı Sarayı Müzesi Kütüphanesi'nde yer alan farklı koleksiyonlara ait toplam 17 kitap kapağı seçilmiş; bu eserlerde dönem ve üslup ayrımı yapılmamıştır. Kapağında rumi motifi olan bu eserlerin yüksek çözünürlüklü görselleri müze kütüphanesinden talep edilmiş ve dijital ortamda yeniden çizilip analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular doğrultusunda, motiflerin biçimsel özellikleri ve kompozisyon içindeki yerleri değerlendirilmiş; rumi motiflerine ilişkin tipolojik bir katalog oluşturulmuştur. Ayrıca çalışmada, cilt sanatının tarihçesi, kullanılan teknikler ve bezeme türleri hakkında genel bilgiler verilerek, rumi motifinin Osmanlı kitap sanatındaki yeri kapsamlı biçimde ele alınmıştır. Bu tez, sanatsal açıdan büyük değer taşıyan fakat uzun yıllar boyunca göz ardı edilen yazma eser kapaklarının belgelenmesi ve geleneksel motiflerin korunarak geleceğe aktarılması açısından önemli bir katkı sunmayı hedeflemektedir.

This study aims to examine the compositions of the rumi motif an important element of Ottoman book arts on the covers of selected manuscript works housed in the Topkapı Palace Museum Library. The rumi motif, a characteristic component of Islamic ornamentation that developed due to the limitations on figurative representation, stands out for its aesthetic and symbolic qualities, particularly in the arts of tezhip (illumination) and bookbinding. Over time, the motif became increasingly stylized and found widespread application within the broader tradition of Turkish decorative arts. As part of the research, various illuminated bindings were identified from published sources. A total of 17 book covers from different collections within the Topkapı Palace Museum Library were selected without distinction in terms of period or stylistic approach. High-resolution images of these covers, all featuring the rumi motif, were obtained from the museum library. These images were then digitally redrawn and analyzed in detail. Based on the findings, the formal characteristics of the motifs and their roles within the compositions were evaluated, resulting in the creation of a typological catalogue of rumi motifs. Additionally, the study provides a general overview of the history of bookbinding, the techniques employed, and the types of ornamentation used, offering a comprehensive exploration of the rumi motif's place within Ottoman book arts. This thesis seeks to make a significant contribution to the documentation of manuscript covers which are of great artistic value yet have long been overlooked and to the preservation and transmission of traditional decorative motifs to future generations.
