290 ABSTRACT This study, which takes the first year students studying, through, the. medium of English at Hacettepe University, in the Departments of Medicine and Economics as subjects, concurrently examines, the relationships, between academic attainment and English Language Proficiency besides knowledge of the rules of grammar. This study measures the degree of relationship between two variables whilst it determines which variables are of the major predictors of the academic attainment. It also establishes the degree of association between. the academic success and knowledge of the rules of grammar nullifying the effects of General English Language Proficiency and communicative grammar- Using the findings, suggestions are put. forward as to the targets to design more effective curricula to prepare the students for the target situation in the School of Foreign Languages, Hacettepe University. To this end, two different sets of language tests were used to determine the knowledge of the rules of grammar and language proficiency. The former was designed by the researcher, the latter was one of the former examination papers (June 1998) of First Certificate in English which has sub-components such as listening, speaking, writing, reading and communicative grammar. These tests were administered to the first year students taking preparatory classes in. the School of Foreign Languages and studying at Hacettepe University, in the Departments of Medicine and Economies in which the medium, of instruction was English.. Grade point average_(GPA) of those students are used as criteria for academic success. GPA291 of the students studying through the medium of Turkish are also used as comparison criteria to control intervening variables. The data revealing the lecturers' and the students' perceptions of their own target situation as criteria for academic success other than GPA were collected by means of questionnaires. The data were mainly collected in the 1999-2000 academic year. The findings, indieate.that English Language Proficiency is the. predictor of academic sueeess, and listening skills have predictive power on academic suceess in the Department, of. Medicine whereas, speaking skills do have predictive power on academic success in the Department of Economics. It is realized that different variables are- major- predictors at different Departments inasmuch as target situations are different All variables of language proficiency demonstrate positive correlational patterns with general language proficiency and with the dependent variables. Despite the faet that the knowledge of the rules of grammar gives positive correlation with language proficiency, communicative grammar and academic success, it has no association with academic success when language proficiency and communicative grammar are partialled out
