Özet

Bu tez, 1990'larda Amerika Birleşik Devletlerinde komplo kültürü bağlamında 1993 yapımı The X-Files televizyon dizisinin analizini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır.

This thesis aims to analyze the concepts of paranoia, institutional paranoia, and their ramifications in the television series The X-Files in relation to the post-Cold War period. The X-Files premiered in 1993, within the context of conspiracy culture in the United States of America in the 1990s. Through usage of historical contextualization, literary analysis and political theory; this study offers an understanding of the shift within the paranoid thinking and institutional paranoia in the post-Cold War period. Conspiracy theories and the culture situated around it has long been an integral part of American society and politics. As the earlier culture surrounding conspiracy discourse usually focused on external threats; this saw a shift over time. Internal distrust regarding the American government and institutional bodies increased, a case which would eventually reach a whole new extent with the end of the Cold War. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the biggest adversary of the United States up until that point was now no longer the red scare. This brought forward a whole new culture of skepticism along with narratives regarding the establishment of a brand-new world order. The history of conspiracy culture in the United States up until the 1990s offers an intricate insight into understanding the Red Scare, Kennedy assassination and the end of the Cold War within the limits of skepticism. As this thesis analyzes The X-Files and its impact on the conspiracy culture, it documents the characterization of the Cigarette Smoking Man (CSM) along with the Syndicate and Pat Robertson's The New World Order to provide insight into how the analysis of the series offers a better perspective on United States conspiracy culture within the 1990s. All in all, this thesis aims to demonstrate how as a pop culture product The X-Files encapsulates and reflects a pivotal shift in American conspiracy culture. The series accomplishes this through an exploration of themes such as secrecy, trust and the truth; along with characterization of its heroes and villains. Thus, understanding The X-Files in a conspiracy culture framework deepens the comprehension of a paranoid state of mind during a decade marked by global change and rapid developments.
