Özet
Mevcut çalışma, Cumhuriyet döneminin 1940-1946 yıllarını içeren süreçte, Türkiye'deki çeviri faaliyetini, İngiliz edebiyatından çevrilen eserler kapsamında Çoğul Dizge kuramı çerçevesinde analiz etmektedir. Çalışmanın araştırma nesnesini, ilgili yıllarda“Klasikler Tercümesi”kapsamında çevrilip Maarif Matbaasında basılan İngiliz Klasikleri ve Tercüme dergisinde çeviri seçkisine dahil edilen İngilizce eserler oluşturmaktadır. Bu çerçevede, ilgili yıllarda Maarif Matbaasından basılan 37 İngiliz Klasiği eser ve Tercüme dergisinde 6 yılda 40 sayıda yayınlanan 52 İngilizce eserin çevirisi incelenmiştir. Eserlere yönelik analiz, çeviri eleştirisi ya da çeviri stratejisi gibi metin içi mikro bir değerlendirmeden ziyade, makro düzeyde tematik içerik, tür, ideolojik yönelimler ve kültürel boyutlar bağlamında ele alınmış, kaynak yazın dizgesinden hedef yazın dizgesine olan hareketi dizgesel bir perspektifle değerlendirilmiştir. İncelenen her iki yayındaki (Tercüme dergisi ve Maarif Matbaası) İngilizce eserlerin konu ve temalarına değinilmiş; eserler, kaynak dizgeden seçildikleri tarihsel dönem, edebî tür özellikleri ve tematik yapıları bakımından incelenmiştir. Eserler bu özelliklere göre sınıflandırılarak, İngilizce çeviri eserlerin Türk yazın dizgesinin o dönemki genel görünümü içerisinde aldığı konum ve Türk yazın dizgesine tür ve tema bakımından sağladığı katkı bulgulanmıştır. İngiliz edebiyatından seçilen eserlerin, kültür planlaması ve ulus inşaası bağlamında, Hümanizm, Rönesans, Aydınlanma ve Batılılaşma gibi ideolojik söylemleri ne şekilde desteklediği tespit edilmiş ve bu seçkinin Türk okurunda hangi düşünce biçimlerini tetiklemeyi hedeflediği tartışılmıştır. Maarif Matbaası ve Tercüme dergisi, Cumhuriyetin kurucu ilkelerinden“Devletçilik”ilkesi doğrultusunda devletin çeviri olgusunda doğrudan söz sahibi olduğu kurumsal yapılanmalardı. Mevcut çalışma, devletin iştirakının ve himaye pozisyonunun, eser seçkisi, çevirmen kadrosu, çeviriye dair normlar ve çevirinin toplumsal dönüşüm sağlama misyonu arasındaki ilişkisini değerlendirmiştir. Ayrıca çevirilerin ulusal yazın dizgesindeki“merkezi”pozisyonunun, Gideon Toury'nin çeviri normları doğrultusunda tanımlanan kabul edilebilir ya da yeterli çeviriler üzerinden dönemin çeviri anlayışındaki söylemlere nasıl yansıdığı incelenmiştir. Bu çalışma Çoğul Dizge kuramına yerel bağlama duyarlı bir okuma önerisi ile dönemin İngiliz edebiyatı çeviri seçkisinin hedeflenen devlet ideolojisi doğrultusunda ne şekilde araçsallaştırıldığını ortaya koyarak, Türk çeviribilim yazınına kuramsal ve uygulamalı alanda katkı sağlamayı hedeflemektedir.

This study analyzes the translation movement in Türkiye during the Republican Era (1940-1946) within the framework of Polysystem Theory, focusing on works translated from English literature. The research subject comprises the English Classics published by the Maarif Press as part of the“Translation of the Classics”project, as well as the English works included in the translation selection of the Tercüme journal during the relevant years. Within this scope, the translations of 37 English classic works published by the Maarif Press and 52 English works published in 40 issues over 6 years in the Tercüme journal have been examined. The analysis of the works was conducted not through a micro-level, intra-textual evaluation such as translation criticism or translation strategy, but rather on a macro level, considering thematic content, genre, ideological orientations, the era it was written and cultural dimensions; it assessed the movement from the source literary system to the target literary system from a systemic perspective. The subjects and themes of the English works in both publications were addressed; these works were examined in terms of the historical period from which they were selected from the source system, their literary genre characteristics, and their thematic structures. By classifying the works according to these features, the position of the English translations within the general outlook of the Turkish literary system of that period and their contribution to the Turkish literary system in terms of genre and theme were identified. It was determined how the works selected from English literature supported ideological discourses such as Humanism, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment and Westernization within the context of cultural planning and nation-building, and the study discussed which models of thought this selection aimed to trigger in the Turkish readership. The Maarif Press and the Tercüme journal were institutional structures where the government directly intervened in the phenomenon of translation, in line with the founding principle of“Statism”from the Republican tenets. The present study has evaluated the relationship between the government's participation and patronizing position, the selection of works and translators, translation norms, and the mission of translation to bring about social transformation. Furthermore, it examined how the“central”position of translations in the national literary system was reflected in the discourses of the era's translation approach, through the acceptable or adequate translations as defined by Gideon Toury's translation norms. This study also offers a local reading of Polysystem Theory that takes into account the constraints of the local context. By revealing how the selection of English literary translations during this period was instrumentalized in line with the targeted government ideology, this study aims to contribute to the field of Turkish Translation Studies in both theoretical and practical areas.
