Increasing consumption has led to numerous environmental problems, including air pollution, resource depletion, climate change, and global warming. Sustainable consumption, which aims to reduce the negative environmental impacts of these problems, is considered essential for achieving sustainable development. However, changing consumption habits in an environmentally friendly manner is a complex and challenging process. Understanding the role of young people, who represent an important target group for sustainable consumption policies, in this process is crucial for the continuity and effectiveness of sustainable development strategies. Therefore, researchers have conducted studies from various perspectives to encourage sustainable consumption behaviors and understand their dynamics. This study focuses on the development of environmental socialization and environmental reverse socialization processes within families and highlights the role of young people in these processes. Specifically, the study aims to analyze the roles of environmental socialization agents in the acquisition of sustainable consumption habits among young people aged 15–18 and to investigate how young people contribute to the development of their parents' sustainable consumption behaviors through environmental reverse socialization. Furthermore, it examines how this contribution affects the continuity of young people's own sustainable consumption behaviors. For this purpose, data were collected from a total of 1,782 participants, consisting of 891 mothers and their children, through an online survey. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling and Process Macro V4.2. The results indicate that environmental socialization agents positively influence young people's environmental knowledge and sustainable consumption behaviors. In addition, young people's environmental knowledge and sustainable consumption behaviors were found to positively influence their parents' environmental attitudes. The findings also reveal that young people raised in more democratic family environments are more successful in transferring their environmental knowledge and sustainable consumption behaviors to their parents. Furthermore, the results show that positive changes in parents' environmental attitudes lead to improvements in their sustainable consumption behaviors, which, in turn, strengthen young people's intentions to maintain sustainable consumption behaviors in the future. This study is among the few studies that examine household sustainable consumption processes in a multidimensional and reciprocal manner. By simultaneously investigating the environmental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of both parents and their children, the study extends existing theories of intergenerational influence and emphasizes the bidirectional nature of environmental socialization processes within the household. In this regard, the findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, and social marketing practitioners by highlighting young people as both a critical target audience and a catalyst for sustainable consumption practices.
