This study examines the problem of consciousness and self within a comparative framework between contemporary philosophy of mind and classical Islamic thought. Its primary aim is to move beyond the debate over the reducibility of phenomenal consciousness and to reassess the ontological status of consciousness. The explanatory gap, formulated in modern literature under the heading of the“hard problem,”reveals the inadequacy of physical processes in accounting for the“what-it-is-like”dimension of experience. This study argues, however, that the difficulty in question is not merely epistemic but fundamentally ontological. The dissertation presents two distinct models of grounding by comparing John R. Searle's biological naturalism with Suhrawardi's ontology grounded in knowledge by presence (ʿilm al-ḥuḍūrī). Searle maintains that consciousness is ontologically subjective yet situated within biological processes. In contrast, Suhrawardi, within the framework of knowledge by presence, conceives consciousness as direct presence—the precondition of representational knowledge. This comparison shifts the issue of irreducibility from the question“what is irreducible?”to the deeper question“to what does ontological priority belong?”Analyses of pain and color experience demonstrate that phenomenal content cannot be logically reduced to third-person descriptions. At the same time, the study proposes an alternative framework without resorting to dualism or yielding to reductive physicalism. Consciousness is neither a substance outside nature nor merely a functional state; rather, it is an ontological mode of presence manifesting in the first-person perspective. The original contribution of the dissertation lies in its proposal to think together a non-reductive naturalism and a graded ontology. While biological processes illuminate the causal context of consciousness, the ḥuḍūrī perspective clarifies the metaphysical ground of phenomenal particularity. In this way, the problem of consciousness is repositioned—not as a merely technical issue of explanation, but as a fundamental philosophical question requiring the reconsideration of ontological categories.
