The socio-economic, political, and cultural transformations that characterized the Renaissance profoundly reshaped the societal fabric and the life-patterns of individuals. The establishment of city-states on the Italian peninsula, the dissolution of feudal structures, and the emergence of republican forms of government created a social environment in which hierarchical relations were redefined. During this period, the power of the land-based aristocracy gradually declined, while a new urban aristocracy composed of artisans and merchants emerged. The gradual ascent of artisans and merchants within urban governance triggered political tensions between the nobility and the populace, leading to the emergence of novel administrative bodies. The deep-seated political frictions and the struggle between class-based factions paved the way for the rise of singular power centers aiming to consolidate and perpetuate their authority. Alongside the republics in Italian city-states, lords (signori), princes, and despotic regimes (tiranni), having seized power through military or economic means, established dynasties based on claims of absolute sovereignty. The heterogeneous structure of the Renaissance reflects a dynamic shaped by the interplay of diverse actors, including rulers, elites, merchants, artisans, and the peasantry. The aforementioned societal transformations were vividly manifested in domestic architecture. Urban elites constructed palazzi or transformed existing houses in accordance with contemporary practices of representation in order to express their prestige and social status. In this sense, domestic architecture can be understood as architectural manifestations of social hierarchy and cultural values. A similar concern with representation is also evident in villa architecture in rural contexts, where villas emerged as structures reflecting both the aesthetic ideals of the period and the socio economic status of their owners through their relationship with nature. The transformations experienced at both urban and rural scales during the Renaissance are also reflected in architectural treatises. Architectural books written in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries also offered theoretical frameworks that articulated the concept of ideal city and ideal social order. Within this holistic perspective, the domestic architecture was regarded as one of the fundamental components of the ideal city and was diversified according to the needs of different social classes. Within this historical context, the architectural treatises conceived by the Bolognese painter-architect Sebastiano Serlio (1475–ca. 1554) represent a distinctive approach shaped by the visual culture transformed through the spread of printing. Serlio aimed to define the principles of ancient architecture and render them applicable in the sixteenth century, while systematically addressing the process from design to construction. His emphasis on the pedagogical function of drawings constitutes one of the defining characteristics of his architectural approach. Serlio's seven-book series on architecture addresses various aspects of the discipline. Throughout these volumes, Serlio examines geometry, perspective, ancient Roman monuments, architectural orders, church architecture, domestic architecture; furthermore he addresses the practical challenges (accidenti) an architect may encounter, such as designing on irregular plots, building on sloping terrains, or adapting medieval structures to the Renaissance style. Within the scope of this series, Books VI and VII, which provide an examination of domestic architecture, constitute the primary focus of this dissertation. These domestic designs are analyzed through a thematic approach that considers both texts and drawings, examining issues such as housing typologies, architectural representations of social classes, diversity, creativity, the relationship between rules and exceptions, functionality, ornamentation, and the relationship between patron and architect. Prepared while Serlio was working as court architect at the Palace of Fontainebleau upon the invitation of King Francis I of France, the Sixth Book remained unpublished until the twentieth century and circulated across Europe in the form of two manuscripts. The first manuscript is dated between 1541 and 1549, while the second is believed to have been written between 1547 and 1550. In this book, Serlio presents an extensive range of residential designs addressing all social strata, thereby rendering the socio-economic structure of the period visible through architecture. By clearly distinguishing between rural and urban ways of life, he developed housing typologies that reflect the needs of different social groups associated with agriculture and trade. In Book VI, houses are organized within a hierarchical structure ranging from the lowest to the highest social levels. In constructing this hierarchy, Serlio adopted Francesco di Giorgio's classification of peasants, artisans, merchants, nobles, and princes, while expanding this framework to include additional social strata. Rural houses are presented within a hierarchy extending from dwellings designed for peasants to those intended for princes and kings within extensive estates. In urban contexts, a stratification is observed encompassing artisans, merchants, nobles, high ranking officials (such as Podestà and Governatore), princes, and kings. Beyond the designs for distinct social classes, Serlio's sub-categorization of peasants, artisans, and merchants into groups such as“poor,”“more affluent,”and“wealthy”according to their economic status is a noteworthy aspect that merits further scholarly attention. Having previously articulated social hierarchy through the theoretization of ornament in the Book IV on architectural orders, Serlio extended this same approach to his domestic designs. In this context, the principles of decorum (propriety) and commodità (convenience/utility) became the decisive factors in shaping his domestic architecture. He differentiated the rural and urban houses designed for artisans and merchants according to Italian and French styles, reflecting two distinct architectural cultures and adapting the dwellings to varying economic levels. By considering local traditions and geographical conditions together, Serlio developed models that could be adopted in both Italian cities and France, appealing to a broad range of patrons. The Seventh Book, which constitutes the second phase of this study and is examined through the Vienna manuscript, focuses on the practical solutions to architectural problems encountered at the urban scale, such as irregular plots, villa designs on sloping terrain, and the transformation of existing buildings according to Renaissance principles. The principles of symmetry and geometric planning defined by Serlio form the basis of his response to the challenges of constructing buildings on irregular sites. Furthermore, Serlio's seventh book includes twenty-four villa designs that reflect Serlio's understanding of typological diversity. Generally based on centralized planning schemes, these villas are classified into various typologies, including square and rectangular plans, designs with independent corner units, cross-shaped plans, H shaped plans, horizontally extended layouts, theatre-derived schemes, and arrangements derived from the French tradition of enfilade. Through this inherent diversity, Serlio generated spatial richness grounded in geometric composition. Additionally, Seventh Book treats architectural elements such as fireplaces, windows, and dormers as vital components of the dwelling. These designs, which document the architect's stylistic approach, were developed in both Italian and French styles. The architectural discourse presented in Serlio's Books VI and VII serves as a critical framework for evaluating the socio-spatial dynamics of the Renaissance home. Consequently, these volumes constitute a vital contribution to the field, offering a nuanced understanding of the period's social stratification and domestic practices through the systematic analysis of architectural form and textual discourse.
