In the last year of the 19 th century, the number of our publications was higher than ever before. All the periodicals and newspapers published in that period had a common characteristic that every subject related to science, literature, philosophy and psychology could be written in order to erlighten people without entering into politics. This censorship app lied to the press undoubtedly spreng from the Abdiilhamid goverment. In the same period hundreds of periodicals, and besides them news papers, were published. One of these was the periodical called“Maârif Dergisi”. This periodical was published for fire years between 1891 and 1896 without any intervals like all the publications of the time.it made the principle of publishing every scientific and literary subject without touching political matters of its own and followed the same way from the beginning to the end.“Maârif”was among the well-known perio dicals of its time. Even if it did not climb up to the first places like“Servet-i FU- nun”,“irtika”and“Malumat”, its name could be mentioned together with them. If wis -examined the authors of it, we would see the distinctive per sonages of Turkish literature who decorated its pages with their beau tiful poems and articles. If me evalvated the periodical for the content of poems and artic les, we would realize that the starting point of them, was to enlighten people and inform them about the changes in the world. The authors of“Maârif ”, formerly with Muallim Naci, who was a follower of traditions, later joined the literary circle of Recaizade Mahmud Ekrem who was in favor of innovation. This would be clear when we examined the writings which formed the main frame of the periodical. In this sense, particular ly the poems and articles of Ismail Safa and Mehmet Celal, who were the most productive authors of the literary section of the periodical, would be the real evidence.
