Prof.Dr. Ömer Faruk ŞCANIntellectual capital is defined as an abstract asset contributing an added value tothe organization and comprising of the sum of an organization's qualified humancapital, its organizational structure, processes, applications and customers. Intellectualcapital has three components; human capital, structural capital and customer capital.The first part of this study examines the concept of intellectual capital thoroughlyand theoretically while the second part summarizes findings from research andapplications about measuring and reporting intellectual capital. Through reviewing suchconcepts as information, information society and new economy, the first part of thestudy examines the changes that have been taking place. Also intellectual capital isdefined and three aspects of intellectual capital are studied in detail.The second part deals with management, measuring and reporting intellectualcapital in detail. Besides a process regarding the measurement and reporting ofintellectual capital is described in this part.The third and the final part of the study summarizes the findings of a studyconducted in defense industry in order to define variables of intellectual capital andexplain its effects on organizational performance.
