Özet

Bu çalışmada `Emily Bronte'nin Wuthering Heights, Charlotte Bronte'nin Villette, Anne Bronte'nin The Tenant of Wildfell Hall adlı romanlarında Gotik unsurlar incelenmektedir. İncelemenin amacı XVIII. yüzyılda ortaya çıkan, genellikle Orta Çağ'da kasvetli bir kalede, zindanda, gizli yeraltı geçitlerinde geçen gizemli, ürkütücü, doğaüstü olayların anlatıldığı, amacı okuyucuda korku ve ürperti ile yoğun duygular yaratmak olan Gotik roman türünün XIX. yüzyıl romanında nasıl bir değişime ve gelişime uğrayarak yer aldığını, nasıl bir yere ve öneme sahip olduğunu, Viktorya Dönemi romanında, akıl-duygu, bilinç- bilinçaltı çatışmasının anlatılmasında, benliğin anlaşılmasında, kişilerin iç dünyalarının çözümlenmesinde ve dönem özelliklerinin eleştirilmesinde nasıl bir rol oynadığını açıklamaktır. Giriş bölümünde bu çalışmanın amacı belirtilerek genel bir taslak sunulmakta, çalışmanın temel konusu olan `Gotik' terimi ve türü açıklanmakta, bu edebi türün en önemli ve en bilinen örneklerinden olan Horace Walpole'ün The Castle of Otranto adlı eserinde Gotik unsurlar ve bunların kullanım şekli açıklanmaktadır. Gotik türü ve The Castle of Otranto açıklanırken önde gelen eleştirmenlerin bu konudaki görüşlerine yer verilmektedir.Çalışmanın `Wuthering Heights'ta Gotik Unsurlar' adlı Birinci Bölüm'ünde Emily Bronte'nin Wuthering Heights adlı romanı Giriş Bölümü'nde açıklanan Gotik türü bağlamında incelenmektedir. Gotik türünün XIX. yüzyıl edebiyatının romantik eserlerinden kabul edebileceğimiz Wuthering Heights 'ta nasıl yer aldığı ve nasıl bir işlevi olduğu açıklanmaktadır. Bu bölümde Gotik'in özellikle akıl-duygu çatışmalarındaki rolü üzerinde, Gotik'in bireyin kendisi ile ve toplumla olan çatışmalarındaki rolü üzerinde ve Gotik'in eski şatolardan, kalelerden çıkarılıp eve dahil edilmesi başka bir deyişle `evcilleştirilmesi' üzerinde durulmaktadır. Ayrıca roman kişileri Gotik türü doğrultusunda incelendiğinde romanın yazıldığı dönem olan Viktorya Dönemi toplumsal yargıları ve dönem insanlarıyla pek uyuşmayan yönleri de göz önüne serilmektedir. Viktorya Dönemi romancılarının ele almaya çekindikleri aşk, tutku gibi kavramların bu romanda yoğun bir şekilde yer aldığı ve Gotik'in bu kavramları kuvvetlendiren bir unsur olduğu görülmektedir.`Villette'de Gotik Unsurlar' adlı İkinci Bölümde Charlotte Bronte'nin Villette adlı romanı Giriş Bölümünde açıklanan Gotik türü bağlamında incelenmektedir. Gotik'in bu romanda akıl-duygu, bilinç-bilinçaltı çatışmasının göz önüne serilmesinde ve roman kişilerinin iç dünyalarına ulaşılmasında önemli bir rolü olduğu açıklanmaktadır. Bu romanda Dr. John'un halüsünasyonlar üzerine açıklamalarıyla, Gotik unsur olarak görülen açıklanamayan pek çok olgu insanın bilinçaltının oyunları, iç dünyasının yansımaları olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bireyin psikolojik ve sosyal sorunları, toplumdaki yeri Gotik unsurların vasıtasıyla sorgulanmaktadır. Bu romanda Gotik unsurların özellikle bireyin diğer bireyler ve toplum tarafından izlenmesi faktörünün yansıtılmasında önemli rolü olduğu görülmektedir. Wuthering Heights'ta `evcilleştirilen' Gotik Villette'de farklı bir mekanla (manastırla) farklı bir boyut kazanmaktadır. Roman kişilerinin, romanın yazıldığı dönem olan Viktorya Çağı ile uyumu elaalındığında Wuthering Heights'ta olduğu gibi burada da dönem insanlarıyla uyuşmayan yönleri göze çarpmaktadır.`The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'da Gotik Unsurlar' adlı Üçüncü Bölümde, Gotik türü ve bu türe ait unsurların Anne Bronte'nin The Tenant of Wildfell Hall adlı romanında nasıl bir yer aldığı, roman ve roman kişileri üzerinde nasıl bir etkisi olduğu açıklanmaktadır. Viktorya Dönemi özelliklerini yansıtan bu romanda, daha önceki bölümlerde açıklanan eski ve yeni Gotik unsurlar, bu unsurların toplumsal özelliklerin ve bireyin iç dünyasının yansıtılmasında nasıl bir rol oynadığı üzerinde durulmaktadır. Gotik unsurlar ve korkuların Villette'de olduğu gibi bireyin diğer bireyler ve toplum tarafından izlenmesi, çeşitli spekilasyonlara, dedikodulara maruz kalması ve bunlardan kaçınması nedeniyle hissettiği baskı ve korkuların yansıtılmasında etkili rolü olduğu açıklanmaktadır. Wuthering Heights ve Villette' de olduğu gibi The Tenant of Wildfell Hall'da da Gotik'in aile ve ev hayatı içine alındığı, domestikleştirildiği görülmektedir.Çalışma, XVIII. yüzyılda ortaya çıkan Gotik türünün, XIX. yüzyıla ait bu üç romanda nasıl bir değişime ve gelişime uğrayarak yer aldığının, nasıl bir yere ve öneme sahip olduğunun, Viktorya Dönemi romanında, akıl-duygu, bilinç- bilinç altı çatışmasının anlatılmasında, benliğin anlaşılmasında, kişilerin iç dünyalarının çözümlenmesinde ve dönem özelliklerinin eleştirilmesinde nasıl bir rol oynadığının genel bir değerlendirmesiyla sona ermektedir.

In this study, the Gothic elements of Emily Bronte?s Wuthering Heights, Charlotte Bronte?s Villette, Anne Bronte?s The Tenant of Wildfel Halll are analyzed. The aim of this study is to shed light on how the Gothic novel that occurred in the 18th Century, in which mysterious, gruesome and supernatural events taking place in a gloomy castle, dungeon or secret underpasses generally in the Middle Ages are told and the aim of which is to arouse a feeling of fear and shudder in the reader was changed and developed in the 19th Century novel, how valuable and important it is, and what kind of a role it has in the explanation of the conflict of reason-emotion and conscious-subconscious, in understanding the ego, in the analysis of the inner worlds of the individuals, and in the critique of the characteristics of the period.In the introduction, the aim of this study is stated and an outline of it is presented. Additionally, the term `Gothic?, its genre and Gothic elements in Horace Walpole?s The Castle of Otranto, which is one of the most famous examples of this genre, are defined and their usage is explained. While Gothic genre and The Castle of Otranto are being explained, the ideas of well-known critics are also noted.In the First Chapter of the study called `Gothic Elements in Wuthering Heights?, Emily Bronte?s Wuthering Heights in the context of Gothic genre is described in the introduction. It is presented how the Gothic genre takes place and what kind of a function it has in Wuthering Heights which can be accepted as one of the romantic works of XIX. Century literature. In this chapter, some issues are discussed such as the role of Gothic in reason ? emotion conflicts, in the inner conflict of the individual and his conflict with the society, and it?s being taken out of the castles of Middle Ages and made a part of our houses, which means it?s being `domesticated?. Furthermore, it is clearly stated that when the fiction characters are analyzed regarding to Gothic genre, they are mismatching with the social judgments of the Victorian Period and people of the time. It is clearly seen that the concepts such as love and passion which the Victorian novelists abstain from using are intensely made use of and that Gothic is an element which reinforces these concepts.In the second chapter named `Gothic Elements in Villette?, Charlotte Bronte?s Villette is analyzed in the context of Gothic genre described in the introduction. It is explained that Gothic has an important role in displaying the reason ? emotion, conscious ? subconscious conflict and reaching the inner world of the characters in the novel. In this novel, with the explanations of Dr. John about hallucinations, it is thought that most unexplained phenomena which are considered as Gothic elements are the tricks of human subconscious and the reflection of their inner world. The psychological and social problems of the individual and his place in the society are questioned through Gothic elements. In this novel, it has been observed that Gothic elements have an important role in the reflection of the factor pointing out individual?s being watched by the others and the society. Gothic which is `domesticated? in Wuthering Heights gains a different dimension with a different setting (monastery). It is highlighted that when the compatibility is considered between the characters in the novel and the Victorian Period, there are also mismatching parts here as it is in Wuthering Heights.In the third chapter called `Gothic Elements in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall? it is explained that what kind of a place Gothic elements have in Anne Bronte?s The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and an effect on the characters. In this novel reflecting the characteristics of the Victorian Period, the old and new Gothic elements explained before, and kind of a role they have in reflecting social characteristics and individual?s inner world are emphasized. It is stated that the Gothic elements and fears have an active role in the reflection of pressure and horror the individual feels, which is caused by his being watched by the others and the society, being exposed to various speculations and abstaining from them. It can be clearly seen that in The Tenant of Wildfell Hall as it is in Wuthering Heights and Villette, Gothic has been taken into the family and home life and domesticated.The study is concluded by a general assessment of how Gothic genre that occurred in the 18th Century changed and developed in these three novels in the 19th Century, how valuable and important it is, what kind of a role it has in the Victorian novel, in the explanation of the conflict of reason ? emotion and conscious ? subconscious, in the analysis of the inner world of the individuals, and in the critique of the characteristics of the period.
