Pagan kültüründe yer alan Kâse efsanesi Orta Çağ'a gelindiğinde Hıristiyanlığın etkisi ile anlam değiştirmiştir. Gerek Kâse gerekse Kâse'yi bulma arayışı Hıristiyanlık öğretileri çerçevesinde yorumlanmıştır. Bu dönemde kökeni mitolojiye dayanan Kâse Kutsal Kâse'ye dönüşmüştür. Orta Çağ'da Kutsal Kâse efsanesini konu alan en önemli eserlerden biri de yazarı bilinmeyen Kutsal Kâse'yi Arayış' tır (The Quest of the Holy Grail).

Throughout centuries, the Grail legend has played a crucial role in the Western world. The Grail?s being an unattainable object increases its mystery. Till the end of the eleventh century, the Grail was only associated with the cauldrons of Dagda and Bran in Celtic and Welsh mythologies. Additionally, the first known literary text that includes the Grail theme as its basis is Chrétien de Troyes? unfinished work Perceval. In this work, the Grail is depicted as an ordinary cup.During the Middle Ages the Grail legend, that has its roots in ancient pagan culture, gains a new meaning with the influence of Christianity. Both the Grail and the search for it gain a Christian aspect. During this period, the Grail turns into the Holy Grail. The Quest of the Holy Grail, written by an unknown author in the thirteenth century, is one of the crucial examples that deal with the Holy Grail legend. In this work, the Holy Grail is depicted as a religious symbol which represents god given abundance and fertility. It is also depicted as the cup that provides endless food. In addition to these, the lance that accompanies it and the Knights of the Round Table who search for it similarly gain religious meanings. In The Quest of the Holy Grail, Arthur and his knights who are in the foreground are also identified as the servants of Jesus Christ. In contemporary British literature, the Holy Grail has become the subject matter of many literary works. It has been recurrently used in novels and research books and also in visual works like documentaries and movies. The reason for such fascination with this subject is directly related to the fact that the Grail quest is an unfinished story. As Chrétien de Troyes left his work unfinished, the contemporary writers, in a way, aim at completing his story of the Grail. Through the use of the themes of intrigue, adventure, mystery and the struggle between good and evil in the contemporary works, increase the interest in the Grail legend. Moreover, in an age when the church is no longer dominant in every aspect of life as it was in the Middle Ages, the Grail has gained new meanings in these works without much emphasis on its Christian features. One of the contemporary examples is Kate Mosse?s Labyrinth. In this rewriting of the myth, as different from its medieval counterparts, the Holy Grail is presented as the cup that provides the elixir of life. In the Labyrinth, through a reworking of its Christian and pagan qualities, the Holy Grail is transferred into a universal symbol proper for all religions. Besides, instead of the medieval male grail guardians, in the novel heroines are given powerful roles in protecting the secrets of the grail by the author. As a conclusion; despite different depictions of the Holy Grail legend in The Quest of the Holy Grail and in Labyrinth, the Grail serves as a source of inspiration for authors throughout centuries. Moreover as a symbol of search, adventure and as an unattainable object, the Holy Grail legend still possess its mysterious nature.
