Özet (Çeviri)
This Thesis argues that international terrorism should not merely be seen as security threat in the narrow sense of the term. Beyond killing people or destroying specifıc properties, terrorist acts also have a noteworthy negative impact upon the economies of those countries that are subjected to it. The phenomenon of international terrorism is thus a good example of the interconnections between politics and economics. The fırst chapter addresses the question of how terrorism should be defmed, drawing upon both academic and offıcial attempts to provide such a defıniton. However, such defınitions inevitably face the problem of how to seperate 'terrorism' from other activities like, for example, wars of national liberation. The chapter ends with embracing Bruche Hoffman's flexible conceptualization of terrorism. The second chapter gives a historical overview of terrorism, with the emphasis being upon four majör historical waves of terrorism, i.e. the anarchist, anti-colonial, New Left and religious wave, that followed upon each other. In a miscellaneous way, the third chapter discusses several aspects of terrorism. İts ultimate purpose, the expenses and fınancial resources of terrorist groups, the distinction between international and global terrorism, the question of whether the 9/11 attacks and subsequent terrorist activities are of a fundamentally different character as pre-2001 terrorism, and the theoretical implication of international terrorism for the discipline of IR. The fourth chapter forms the core of the Thesis. Drawing upon a wide range of quantitative data, the interrelation between terrorist attacks and the economic performance of the targetted countries is discussed sector by sector, i.e. foreign trade, FDI, tourism, securities markets and agriculture. Likewise, the effects of terrorism upon economic growth and state budgets are dealt with. To shift from general statements tovvards a more specifıc case study, the fıfth chapter focuses upon the al-Qaida network and its 9/11 attacks. The emphasis is upon the political reactions in the USA and elsewhere, which ultimately led to the American intervention in Afghanistan. However, the last section of this chapter shows how the 9/11 attacks affected the world economy and links the case of 9/11 with the subjects discussed in the previous chapter.
