Throughout the course of history almost all known civilizations have contributed to the“books of advice”genre with different labels; such as“sbyt,”“āstra,”“andarz,”“mirror for prince”and“siyāsatnāma.”Even though they primarily addressed kings and higher officers, the scholars indeed have realized the principles offered in these texts are relevant to the management and accordingly converted them into the field of management. Nevertheless, the aforementioned attempts have not been spread out to the siyāsatnāma texts. This study aims to show the relevance of the siyāsatnāma books, written by the scholars of the Islamic civilization, to the modern management, specifically leadership studies. The concrete objective of this work is to generate a leadership model derived from the Islamic mirrors and to compare it with the current theories of leadership. Since our objective was to find out the leadership understanding based in the advice texts without the limitations of the existing literature, a qualitative research, specifically the“grounded theory”approach, was carried out. The“content analysis”of the books, which are selected not only from a management perspective but also from historical, philosophical and political perspectives, also underlies this work. After the collection of the initial data (2012-2013) covering various Islamic mirrors introduced in this work, the final data collection (2016) focused on the manuscripts which were selected as representative samples of the genre:“Siyāsatnāma”written by Nizām al-Mulk and“Kutadgu Bilig”written by Yusūf Khāṣṣ Ḥājib. In compliance with the research questions and the principle of“theoretical sampling”the texts which will support the leadership model were purposefully preferred. The raw data were read several times and coded (open coding), the categories which are relevant to a theory generation were separated and accumulated into the core categories (selective coding), and finally the fragments were interconnected back together in order to generate a model (theoretical coding). MaxQDA – a qualitative data analysis software – was employed not only for data management, memoing, coding and retrieving the data but also for mixed methods analysis and visualization of the results. In brief, this work claims that Kutadgu Bilig and Siyāsat-nāma describe an outstanding leader in terms of 23 single attributes which are classified under six core categories: Administrative Attributes, Integrity & Justice & Benevolence, Intelligence & Wisdom, Nobility, Physical Appearance, and Social Ethics. A deeper evaluation based on the number of coded segments provides us with rating of attributes according to their relative significance within the whole text. While demographics - nobility and physical appearance - seem negligible, moral attributes – social ethics, integrity & justice & benevolence - rise to prominence. Thereby the leadership model created in this work combines traits, behavior, and moral values; however, values are indispensable condition of efficiency. A gear system devoid of sun gear lack driving power and does not function. The administrative attributes have secondary importance because gear system may operate without planet but not efficiently. It is also noteworthy that the attribute of the“intelligence and wisdom”which is mainly a trait-related task competence, participates in the system as a planet. Looking across centuries, the comparative analysis has revealed that Islamic mirrors' approach to the leadership differs from any trait, behavior and contingency model of leadership. In other respects, they introduce a leadership model which is necessarily value-driven and social ethicscentered. More precisely, it bears the stamp of ethical and servant leadership. However, it must be significantly remarked that the model places a premium on virtuousness of the ruler at the individual level and on the attributes of justice and benevolence at the administrative level. The final analysis reveals us that the keyword for the leadership model based in the Islamic books of advice is virtuousness.
