Purpose – The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the reasons why international students decide to come to the UK to study, the challenges they face and the coping strategies they develop as result. Furthermore, I want to know what motivates them to stay in the country after graduation. The link between international student migration and their decision to stay and work in the host country after graduation has rarely been studied to date. International students represent future highly-qualified immigrants and highly-qualified immigrants are often a source of global talents. Thus, the research question of this study is highly relevant and important for the UK economy. Design/methodology/approach – An inductive qualitative approach was used; Semi structured interviews were conducted on 15 International Students (7 male and 8 female) from 13 different countries. The semi-structured interviews were designed by researcher includes checking migration, student migration and integration literature review. Further thematic data analysis was adopted. Findings – Research discovered that students are driven by future consideration with“personal development”like life experience, abroad experience, getting access to higher education which means them that 'oversea is better than local' with high quality and certainly to idea of career prospect. The future employability is discovered as the main motivation of student migration, future employability in better conditions is given a priority rather than other factors by more than half of participant. In related with international student migration, UK has the great 'image' on being host country for education by educational culture and providing high quality, research opportunities, easier barriers on accepting students, compare to USA, opportunity of completing programmes earlier than other competitors and safety conditions from international student perspective. The variables that found from research shows the power of UK's ability to influence students which includes good co-operation with local agencies to organize the requirements which helps to get accept easier from university and government. For research question2&3, this study found the most common challenges that students faced in the UK and coping strategies students develop as result. Challenges and coping strategies which are found in related to integration process which has an impact on motivation of decision about staying in the UK or returning the home country. Finally, the researcher created a model that shows how different contextual variables influence the motivations of international students to stay in the UK through their impact on the integration process, such as separation and integration. Research Limitations - Due to time and word count constraint, the study conducted 15 interviews with international students who study in Brunel University. To search for the issues students faced and their motivations on migrating to the UK in a broader basis such as conducting interviews in different universities would be more accurate for the research.
