VI ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) on English as a foreign language (EFL) students' achievement in English writing and on their attitudes toward computer-assisted writing/ word processing, writing in English, computers, and word processing programs. Since EFL student writers could greatly benefit from the application of computer technology to foreign language writing processes, the study was conducted to explore whether EFL students' writing and their attitudes would improve because of using word processing as a facilitative CALL activity. Chapter I of the thesis presents a short background to CALL, the research problems, the related hypotheses, the aim of the study, and dependent/ independent variables. In this chapter, the importance and limitations of the study are also discussed briefly. Chapter II is devoted to an extensive review of the published literature on CALL. It presents and discusses diachronic, theoretical and applied dimensions of CALL, including the history and scope of CALL, roles of computers in second /foreign language learning, pros and cons of computers/ CALL, and major computer applications in linguistics and language learning. It is also within this chapter that the most important questions and problems of the area are reviewed with a particular emphasis on the questions posed by CALL professionals and authors. This chapter also presents the results and findings of the related CALL studies conducted on the effects of CALL on student achievement and attitudes
