Özet

Ill SUMMARY The purpose of this study is to develop a perspective on mother/goddess worship, by particularly concentrating on the Virgin of Guadalupe and female deities in Mexican religion. While the cult and image of Mother Goddess has been studied within the character of Virgin of Guadalupe, it has been attempted to outline the meaning or meanings of her as a religious symbol, and to establish relations between religious symbols and socio-cultural and psychological processes within the historical context. Whether the change of the status of goddesses among the deities is accompanied by certain historical events and cultural processes was one of the proposal of the study. Even though such a correlation has been observed in general, a direct and universal relation has not been found. Therefore, it has been concluded that the generalization from an example of a goddess symbol is not reasonable and every culture has to be studied within the context of its own dynamics. The other proposal of the study could be phrased as“Virgin of Guadalupe had appeared during one of the most serious crisis in Mexican history”. In this context, it has been tried to draw the cultural map of Mexico for the 16th century, in which the Virgin of Guadalupe had appeared. In addition, it has been tried to determine cultural structures of Mexico before Columbus and of Spain in 15th century, and possible effects of these structures on the appearance and establishment of the cult of Virgin of Guadalupe. Concurrently, the independent characteristics of these two cultures has been studied, and then the new culture, developed as a result of interaction of these cultures or acculturation, has been evaluated. Consequently, it has been observed that the 16th century Mexico was in a chaotic state in terms of cultural values. Furthermore, it has been thought that theIV appearance of Virgin of Guadalupe was an answer to Mexican's search for security in this cultural blur, and their desire to find a diversion point to create cosmos from chaos. This could be phrased both as a desire for regression to fetal position and as an attempt of reincarnation. Virgin of Guadalupe, born out of this chaos, is a combination of two main components. While she was the one who carried the tradition of goddess from the Old World to the New World, at the same time, she was the example of the tradition of goddess born from the cultural and historical background of the New World. Based on these discussions, it has been concluded that the mother goddess symbol may have a universal dimension, however, the appearance and survival of the symbol in a certain culture depends on the socio-cultural conditions of this culture. Therefore, studies on religious symbols, such as goddesses, should include both works on cultural components and context analysis of the symbols.
