Özet
Bu çalışmada biri Batılı, diğeri Osmanlı olan iki düşünürün birbiriyle bağlantılı iki eserindeki İslam ve Batı algısını ilgili tarihî şartlar içinde kıyaslamak yoluyla 19. yüzyıl Osmanlı ve Batı düşünce tarihi incelemelerine katkı yapmak amaçlanmaktadır. Böylelikle Thomas Carlyle'ın Türk düşünce hayatına İslam ve Batı algısı bakımından etkisi Mahmud Esad Seydişehrî örneğinde ele alınmaktadır. İskoç asıllı ünlü edebiyatçı, tarihçi ve düşünür Thomas Carlyle'ın 1840-41 yıllarına ait On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History isimli eseri büyük adamlar teorisine yaptığı katkıyla Batı dünyasında, Hz. Muhammed'e olumlu yaklaşması sebebiyle de İslâm âleminde önemli bir fikrî etki yaptı. Carlyle bu eserde hem Batılıların 19. yüzyılda İslam'a nasıl baktığı hakkında önemli ipuçları vermektedir hem de bu konudaki kendi farklı bakış açısıyla özgün düşünür kimliğini ortaya koymaktadır. Mahmud Esad Efendi'nin söz konusu eserdeki Hz. Muhammed'e dair bölümü tercüme edip ayrıntısıyla açıkladığı kitabı Şeriat-ı İslamiyye ve Mister Carlyle ise 1897-1900 yılları arasında yayımlandı ve yüzyıl sonundaki kısmen farklı fikrî atmosferi yansıtmaktaydı. Bu iki yazar ve eseri düşünce tarihi açısından karşılaştırmak kapsamında bu çalışmanın birinci bölümünde yazarların hayat hikâyelerine kısaca bakılmakta ve eserler hakkında temel bilgiler verilmektedir. İkinci bölümde, yazarların akılcılık ve duygu-sezgi ikiliğinde nerede durdukları ele alınmaktadır. Bu amaçla bu bölümde dönemin İslam ve Batı düşünce tarihlerine damga vurmuş olan rasyonalizm, bilimcilik, Romantizm ve tasavvuf gibi konulara göz atılmaktadır. Yazarların bu iki eserde İslam'a, Avrupa ve Hıristiyan medeniyetinin geçmişine ve nihayet modern Batı'ya nasıl baktıkları da diğer bölümlerde ele alınmaktadır. This study is aimed at making a contribution to the research on 19th-century Ottoman and Western intellectual histories by comparing the perception of Islam and the West in two related works by two thinkers, one of them Western and the other Ottoman, within the relevant historical circumstances. In this way, the influence of Thomas Carlyle on Turkish intellectual life in terms of the perception of Islam and the West is approached through the example of Mahmud Esad Seydişehrî. The 1840-41 work On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and the Heroic in History by the famous Scottish man of letters, historian and thinker Thomas Carlyle had an important effect on the Western world through its contribution to the great men theory and on the Muslim World through its sympathetic approach toward the Prophet Muhammad. In this work, Thomas Carlyle both provides important clues about how people in the West saw Islam in the 19th century and reveals his identity as an original thinker through his own unique point of view on the subject. The book Şeriat-ı İslamiyye ve Mister Carlyle in which Mahmud Esad Efendi translates and expounds the chapter on the Prophet Muhammad in the said work was published between the years 1897 and 1900, and it reflects the partially different intellectual atmosphere at the end of the century. Within the context of comparing these two authors and books with regard to intellectual history, a brief look is taken at the lives of the authors and basic information is provided about the works in the first chapter of this study. In the second chapter, it is discussed where the authors stand on the duality between rationalism and sentimentality-intuition. For this purpose, subjects such as rationalism, scientism, Romanticism and Sufism, which put their stamp on the intellectual histories of Islam and the West in this period, are approached in the same chapter. In the remaining chapters, it is discussed how the authors viewed Islam, the past of the European and Christian civilization and, finally, the modern West in these two works.
