Özet (Çeviri)
Internationalisation brought with it a perpetual search for opportunities, regardless of the national borders. Firms strive to find the best locations for their operations. Some operation hubs emerge, as the others lose their importance. One of the most astonishing developments in international production was the rise of Chinese manufacturing. The country has become a powerhouse of labour intensive manufacturing. However, as the country develops and wages increase, curiosity dominates the business world. A lot is being written and said about a possible location of a new manufacturing hub. Yet, most of the claims are built on sand, without a proper structure or logic. Obviously, some very dear studies are exonerated. Finding the best alternative requires the evaluation of all possible options. This study constitutes an evaluation of one of the options, viz. sub-Saharan Africa. Heckscher-Ohlin theory, the eclectic paradigm, the global factory, global supply chains and international manufacturing networks form the theoretical structure. The theories and models were integrated in order to create a single logical structure. The eclectic paradigm and Ferdows' s (1989) framework were merged to limit the eclectic paradigm with only manufacturing sector. The analysis was done using case study method, based on quantitative and qualitative information. Kenya and Ethiopia were analysed. The factor endowments of the countries were assessed in comparison with China. Subsequently, feasibilities of those countries were evaluated with the use of simple factor rating method. The findings indicate that both Kenya and Ethiopia are labour abundant as compared to China. Also, as alternatives for off-shore factories, both Kenya and Ethiopia are more feasible than China. However, Africa seems to be unable to unleash its potential. Mainly because of corruption, bad infrastructure, energy scarcity, supply chain risks and instability.
