Özet

( TEZİN )TÜRKÇE ÖZET(İ) Bilim, teknoloji ve sosyal ilişkilerdeki hızlı gelişmeler neticesinde bir yabancı dili bilmek, değişen dünyada daha fazla önem kazanmıştır. Dünyadaki diğer insanlarla haberleşmek için, pek çok insan, ihtiyaç duyduğunda, farklı yaş gruplarında bir yabancı dili öğrenmeye çalışmaktadır. Modern dünyayla iletişim kurmak isteyen herkesin, en az bir yabancı dil öğrenmeden, bloklaşma halindeki Avrupa devletleriyle haberleşmesi mümkün değildir. Bu nedenle, ülkemiz Türkiye'nin Avrupa Topluluğuyla entegrasyon süreci içerisinde olmasından dolayı, bir yabancı dili öğrenmek, bilgi toplumu içinde yaşayan insanların iletişim ihtiyaçlarına doğal bir tepkisi olarak görülür. Dil aynı zamanda, Türkiye'nin entegre olmak üzere içinde bulunduğu Avrupa Topluluğuna, teknik, kültürel, turistik ve ticari bilgileri aktarmada hayati rol oynayan değerli bir araçtır. Yine de, Turizm İşletmeciliği ve Otelcilik Yüksek Okulundaki öğrencilerin özel amaçlı İngilizce öğrenimi, turizm alanında başarılı olabilmek için, öğrenmek zorunda oldukları son derece önemli bir daldır. Birinci bölüm, öğretmen-merkezli İngilizce öğretim programlarından kaynaklanan bazı problemleri gözden geçirmektedir. Aynı zamanda bu bölüm; özel amaçlı İngilizce programı geliştirmede, İngilizce öğretim elemanlarının önerileri ve öğrencilerin ihtiyaç analizlerinin ağır bastığı Antalya, Aydın, Balıkesir ve Nevşehir T.İ ve O. Y. Okullarında uygulandığından, çalışmanın amacını ve kapsamını belirlemektedir. İkinci bölüm, bu çalışmada ilk tartışmayı açmak için ilgili literatür taramasını ihtiva etmektedir, ihtiyaç analizi vasıtasıyla verilerin nasıl toplanacağı hakkında fikir edinmek için, özel ve genel amaçlı İngilizce öğretim yaklaşımları gözden geçirilmiştir. Buna bağlı olarak, ihtiyaç analizinin önemi ve programın bölümleri, hazırlama, sunma ve değerlendirme safhaları açısından gözden geçirilmektedir. Üçüncü bölüm, T.İ ve O. Y. Okullarındaki hem öğretim elemanı hem de öğrenciler hakkında araştırmayı yürütmek için takip edilecek değerlendirme prosedürü hakkındadır. Aynı zamanda bu bölüm, özne gruplarıyla, takip edilecek yöntem ve veri toplamada kullanılacak hesaplama yöntemiyle ilgilidir.Dördüncü bölüm ise, anketlerin detaylı değerlendirilmesi ve yorumlanmasına bağlı olarak, T.İ ve O.Y. Okullarındaki hem öğrencilerin dil ihtiyaçları ve hem de öğretim elemanlarının dil öğretim metodolojisini belirlemeyi hedeflemektedir. Bu bölümde varılan sonuç, öğretim elemanlarının önerileri ve öğrencilerin ihtiyaçlarını baz alan ve bu okullardaki öğrencilerin özel ve genel amaçlı İngilizce öğrenimini verimli hale getirmek için, iyi bir program geliştirmenin son derece gerekli olduğudur. Beşinci bölüm, T.İ ve O.Y.Okullarındaki farklı seviyelerdeki öğrencilerin genel ve özel amaçlı ingilizce öğretimi için, esnek ve çok yönlü model bir program önerisini ihtiva etmektedir, öngörülen öğretim prosedürü, çeşitli dil öğretimi yaklaşımlarının karışımıdır. Bu Seçmeci Yöntem vasıtasıyla, model program, hedef dili doğru ve akıcı konuşmayı amaç edinmektedir. Model program, esnek ve kolayca uygulanabilir olduğundan öğrencilerin ihtiyaç duyduğu ana ve alt dil becerilerini karşılamak için, yeniden kolayca biçimlendirilebilinir. Son bölüm ise, çalışmanın yorum ve sonuç kısmını içerir. Bu bölümde öğrencilerin genel amaçlarının pedagojik ilişkisi belirtilmiş ve bu araştırmaya bağlı olarak ileride yapılabilecek bazı çalışmalar önerilmiştir.

IV ( THE ) SUMMARY ( OF THE DISSERTATION IN ENGLISH ) Speaking a foreign language has gained greater importance in changing world as a consequence of the fast developments in science, technology and social affairs. In order to communicate with other people in the world, most people try to learn a foreign language at different age levels when the need arises. It is impossible to communicate with people of European Union without learning at least one foreign language. For anyone who wants to make a contact with modern world, the command of a foreign language is essential. For this reason, learning (a) foreign language(s) is seen as a natural response to the communicative needs of people who live in an informative society. It has also been said that language is a precious instrument which plays a vital role to transfer technical, cultural, social and commercial know-how to the European Community with which Turkey is on the brink of integration. However, ESP for the adult learners at Tourism Business and Hotel Management (T.B.H.M.) Colleges is such an important discipline that they have to learn a foreign language ( English ) in order to be successful in tourism field. This thesis reviews some problematic issues and attempts to suggest effective solutions to them. The first chapter reviews some problems arising from teacher-oriented ELT syllabuses. This section also limits the aim and scope of the study as the needs assessment was conducted at only Antalya, Aydın, Balıkesir and Nevşehir T.B & H.M. Colleges with specific emphasis on learners' needs and ELT teachers' suggestions on ESP syllabus design. The second chapter contains the review of the related literature in order to develop initial discussion of the study. ESP and general English teaching approaches have been reviewed in order to have an idea of how the data are obtained through needs assessment. In reference to this, the importance of needs assessment and the components of the curriculum are examined in terms of preparation, implementation, evaluation stages. The third chapter is about the analytical procedure to be followed in order to carry out the research on both adult learners and ELT teachers at T.B & H.M. Colleges. It also deals with the subject groups, procedure, instruments used in data collection.The fourth chapter attempts to define both adult language learners' needs and the ELT teachers' suggestions on learning / teaching methodology at T.B & H.M. Colleges depending on the previous analytical procedure and the detailed evaluation of the questionnaires. The results of the data collection devices reveal that a well-designed syllabus is strictly essential in order to facilitate general and ESP courses for the learners at T.B & H.M. Colleges on the basis of learners' needs and teachers' suggestions. The fifth chapter includes a suggested model syllabus, which is flexible and adaptable, for teaching general English and ESP to the learners at different levels at T.B & H.M. Colleges. The teaching procedure selected is the collection of various approaches / methods. Through this eclectic method, the model syllabus aims to teach the target language fluently and accurately. Since the model syllabus is flexible and adaptable, it can be re-designed in order to meet the learners' needs related to macro- and micro-skills easily. The last chapter contains the conclusion and the discussion of the study. In this chapter, overall goals of the learners have been defined and pedagogical implications are explained. Finally, suggestions for further research have been suggested.
