Özet
IV ABSTRACT This thesis investigates the functional use of English and Turkish interrogatives from a discourse perspective. The basic aim is to investigate a subject that has not been well exploited or only studied from a structural perspective. In Chapter I, the birth and development of functional approach, previous studies and books written on this issue, the effects of Structuralism on Turkish Linguistics, the historical background (development) of discourse studies - modern discourse, the differences in formal and functional paradigms, the differences between; sentence-utterance-text and context were tried to be evaluated in detail with great care. Chapter II primarily consists of two parts. The first part studies interrogatives in English and Turkish from a structural perspective. The second part studies the possible functional use of interrogatives in context in both languages in a contrastive way. During the conduct of this research all examples were supported by texts taken from plays in order to form a real life atmosphere. Every subtitle has a private conclusion which evaluates the functional differences and similarities of interrogatives in English and Turkish. In Chapter III, which is the conclusion, the findings of the study have been summarized. It has been observed that the questions we ask and the answers weget vary depending on the setting, our purpose, desire...etc., shortly related to an appropriate context. An 'X' question asked in English could be used in Turkish not only to ask for 'Y', but also to ask for the same thing as in English. While this contrast was being made, kinds and the functional properties of interrogatives in both languages were taken into account.
