Many, if not all, of the universities throughout the world have applied technological tools in their teaching to transform the methods of higher education. The investments in putting up an educational technology infrastructure are informed by a variety of benefits which lead to the creation, management and dissemination of knowledge. This poses a question: how do lecturers understand educational technology? This study is designed to reveal this by exploring how educational technology is understood by lecturers at the University of Exeter. An interpretivist approach has been used, with semi-structured interviews as the main data collection tool. NVivo 11 was used to analyse the findings disseminated from the study in order to explore lecturers' perspectives in higher education institutions which might lead to further development. The findings of this research demonstrate that there is limited formal academic use of educational technology in the university. Educational technology is primarily utilised as a resource in the teaching and learning process. The results also show that there is inadequate training of lecturers in using and adopting new technology in the integration of teaching and learning.
