While there is a wealth of research supporting the view that a relationship between mental imagery and improved sporting performance exists, fewer studies have been undertaken into the correlation between using mental imagery and levels of situational cognitive anxiety [SCA]. Based on a cognitive psychological framework, this study aimed to investigate whether such a correlation between the perceived ease of ability in undertaking mental imagery and levels of SCA reported by elite athletes - a sample under-researched to date- exists, and whether it differed according to gender. Using mental imagery techniques to improve performance is commonplace in the professional world of elite sport, and thus, the ability to use such techniques is likely to be considerably higher. This enabled the focus of the study to be predominantly on the correlation with a gender comparison. The quantitative study used two self-report questionnaires completed by 104 elite athletes (52 male, 52 female) which explored their feelings before competition and their perception of how easy they found it to visualise certain images. The data underwent SPSS analysis. Key findings were that there was a strong negative correlation between the reported ease of ability in mental imaging and levels of cognitive anxiety; the easier the participants found visualisation, the less anxious they claimed to feel. The findings also suggested that there is a difference between males and females in how easy they find certain types of imagery. These findings have implications for elite sportsmen and women, sports psychologists, coaches, and for future research. In particular, by investigating why some aspects of competitive performance are more difficult than others to image and if/how it needs to be addressed, and whether breaking down cognitive anxiety into categories that can be aligned with specific imagery work would further improve sporting performance
