Özet
İkinci Dünya Savaşı'nda asker ihtiyacı nedeniyle ABD ordusuna çok fazla askerin alınması, orduda moral ve verimlilik gibi sorunların giderek artmasına neden olmuştur. ABD ordusu artan bu sorunlara çözüm üretebilmek amacıyla sosyal bilimlere; sosyal bilimcilere ve sosyal bilimlerin araştırma yöntemlerine ihtiyaç duymuştur. Bu doğrultuda orduda araştırmalar yürüten en önemli sosyal bilimcilerden birisi sosyolog Samuel A. Stouffer olmuştur. Stouffer'ın istatistiksel araştırma yöntemleri geliştirmesiyle nicel bir sosyolojinin önünü açmış olması, orduda yapılan araştırmalara büyük katkı sağlamıştır. Stouffer öncülüğünde, yarım milyondan fazla asker üzerinde gerçekleştirilen çalışmalar derlenerek“The American Soldier”başlıklı dört ciltlik eser ortaya konulmuştur. Ancak Stouffer gerek sosyoloji gerekse bir alt disiplin olarak askerî sosyoloji literatüründe çok fazla araştırma konusu hâline gelmemiştir. Karşılaştırmalı tarihsel yöntem kullanılarak gerçekleştirilen bu çalışma ile Türkçe literatüründeki eksikliği kapatmak ve askerî sosyoloji disiplininin ortaya çıkış sürecini ortaya koymak amaçlanmıştır. Askerî sosyoloji disiplini için kurucu bir eser olarak nitelendirilebilen The American Soldier'ın ortaya konulma sürecinin daha iyi anlaşılması için Amerika'da sosyolojinin gelişimine, Stouffer'ın sosyoloji disiplinine katkılarına ve sosyoloji anlayışına değinilmiştir. The American Soldier'ın birinci ve ikinci cildinin ele alındığı bu çalışmada; orduda uyum sorunları, liderliğe ve sosyal kontrole yönelik tutumlar, askerlerin görev atamaları ve atama memnuniyetleri, Afro-Amerikan askerler gibi birtakım önemli konulardaki araştırmaların bulgularına ve puan sistemi, göreli yoksunluk gibi çıktılarına yer verilmiştir. The American Soldier, askerî sosyolojinin kuruluşuna katkı sağlamasının yanı sıra orduda sosyal bilimlerin önemini ve katkısını ortaya koyan önemli bir çalışma olmuştur. Bundan dolayı çalışmamızın Türkiye'de askerî sosyoloji disiplinine katkı sağlaması ve orduda sosyal bilimlerin önemine dikkat çekmesi umulmaktadır.

The recruitment of many soldiers to the US Army due to the need for soldiers in the Second World War caused some problems such as morale and efficiency in the army to increase. In order to find solutions to these increasing problems, the US Army turned to social sciences; social scientists and research methods of social sciences. Sociologist Samuel A. Stouffer has been one of the most important social scientists conducting research in the army in this direction. Stouffer's development of statistical research methods, paving the way for quantitative sociology, made a great contribution to research in the army. Under the leadership of Stouffer, studies on more than half a million soldiers were compiled to produce a four-volume work entitled The American Soldier. However, Stouffer has not become the subject of much research in the literature of military sociology, both as sociology and as a sub-discipline. With this study, which was carried out using the comparative historical method in Turkish, it was aimed to close the gap in the literature and to reveal the emergence process of the military sociology discipline. The development of sociology in America, Stouffer's contributions to the discipline of sociology and understanding of sociology are mentioned to better understand the process of revealing The American Soldier, which can be described as a founding work for the discipline of military sociology. In this study, dealing with the first and second volumes of The American Soldier; findings of research on some important issues such as adjustment problems in the army, attitudes towards leadership and social control, assignments of soldiers and their satisfaction with assignments, African-American soldiers, and outputs such as point system and relative deprivation are included. The American Soldier, besides contributing to the establishment of military sociology, has been an important study that reveals the importance and contribution of social sciences in the army. Therefore, it is hoped that our study will contribute to the discipline of military sociology in Turkey and draw attention to the importance of social sciences in the army.
