Objective: This study represents a first attempt to identify the typology of young adults from a large non-clinical sample based on their definitions of healthy eating. We also tented identify between group differences regarding their tendencies towards Orthorexia nervosa (ON), Eating disorders (ED) and Obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), their age, BMI, self-reported quality of life and educational level. Method: 433 individuals (Mage = 23.44, SD = 4.31), 83.6 % women (n =362), 16.39 % men (n = 71), completed a questionnaire assessing definitions of healthy eating, the Eating Habits Questionnaire, the Eating-Disorders Inventory-3 and the Obsessive-compulsive Inventory-Revised. Results: Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 6-factor solution for the definitions of healthy eating:“Politico-ecological”,“Restriction”,“Health benefits”,“Social”,“Pleasure”,“Intolerance”. A multiple regression analysis showed that healthy eating dimensions (factors) predicting ON and ED were quite different. In the case of ON, the main dimensions were“Intolerance”,“Health benefits”, and“Pleasure”, whereas for ED it was“Restriction”and absence of the“Pleasure”. Cluster analysis based on 6 dimensions of healthy eating yielded four clearly distinct groups: a“High adaptative orthorexic”cluster characterized with higher scores in each factor, except the 'Intolerance“; an ”Intolerant orthorexic“ cluster characterized with higher scores in each factor, including the 'Intolerance”; a“Restrictive”cluster characterized with higher scores in“Restriction”and lower scores in“Pleasure”; and a“Low”cluster characterized with lower scores on each factor except the“Pleasure”. In comparison with all other clusters, the“Intolerant orthorexic”cluster displayed greater scores in orthorexic behaviors. Similarly, the“High adaptative orthorexic”displayed greater scores in orthorexic behaviors compared to the“Restrictive”and“Low”cluster. We found no significant between group differences regarding their age, BMI and educational level. Discussion: Findings from this study offer significant support for the possibility of ON being a condition that can vary depending on the individual's definitions of healthy eating. In addition, our results suggest a predictive relationship between different definitions of healthy eating and tendencies towards ON and ED.
