172 ABSTRACT The general purpose of this study was to investigate pregnant women's and their spouses' expectations about their child-to-be and to test the effects of parents' gender, child's gender and parents' gender role orientation on these expectations. The sample consisted of 68 subjects; 34 pregnant women and their spouses who were at least primary school graduates, had no children and no knowledge about their child's gender. The Bern Sex Role Inventory was administered to these couples two times over the course of the pregnancy: before and after getting any information about their child's gender. Using this inventory, parents' gender role orientation, parents' expectations about their child's traits and child's status of androgyny were measured. Open-ended (depth) interviews were held twice with 20 couples. The first interviews were held when the gender of the offspring was unknown, and the second ones after the gender was made known through an ultrasonography. Interview material had not been analysed as such, but used as qualitative material to support or not support inventory results. The results indicated that: There was a statistically significant relationship between parents' gender and preference of their child's gender but there was no significant relationship between parents' gender role orientations and preference of their173 child's gender. When asked what their expectation was for their would be child's gender, the parents reported that it was“unimportant”. Prior to learning the child's gender, the expectant parents mentioned that they wanted their child to be“independent”,“healthy”,“strong”,“w'rth a good sense of morality”,“self-reliant”and“reliable”. And also they mentioned that their expectation from their child is to be highly“androgynous”. In short, there were no significant differences in above mentioned wishes and expectations between expectant mothers and fathers, expectant androgynous parents and gender-typed parents. After learning the child's gender, expectant parents mentioned that they wanted their child to be“independent”,“strong”,“with a good sense of morality”,“self-reliant”,“reliable”,“beautiful/handsome, attractive, good- looking”; and highly“androgynous”. There were no significant differences in mentioned wishes and expectations between expectant mothers and fathers, expectant androgynous parents and gender-typed parents. On the other hand, expectant parents mentioned that they wanted both their daughter and their son to be“independent”,“self-reliant”,“reliable”and“with a good sense of morality”. The child's gender doesn't make a significant difference in the choice of adjectives. Furthermore, expectant parents mentioned that they wanted both their daughter and their son to be highly androgynous. This issue doesn't change significantly on account of gender and gender role orientation of parents. J
