The seismic factor has played a crucial role in influencing historical structures, which is vital for the transmission of cultural heritage to future generations. To mitigate seismic risks, it is essential to first assess the earthquake safety of historical buildings and undertake measures to improve their seismic performance if necessary. In this study, the focus is on evaluating the structural behavior of the supporting system of Selimiye Mosque, located in Nicosia, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Recommendations are provided for enhancing the performance of the structure under vertical loads and earthquake effects. Selimiye Mosque is an example of masonry structures, common in historical buildings. Originally constructed between 1209 and 1326 as a Catholic church, it represents Gothic architectural heritage. Over the years, the mosque has suffered damage from destructive earthquakes and looting, necessitating subsequent restoration efforts. The current structure of the mosque consists of a narthex, naos (sanctuary), and apse sections. The narthex includes eight colossal columns and a bell tower. The sanctuary is basilica-planned, divided into three naves with two rows of six circular columns. Thhere are flying buttresses supporting the middle nave body walls. The apse has a circular form, completed with four flying buttresses and four smaller columns connected to the columns in the sanctuary. The entire structure is composed of ribbed cross vaults. Additionally, there are two minarets and two towers attached to the structure. The mosque is constructed exclusively using precisely cut stone. As a result of earthquakes and settlements, some damages have been observed in the supporting system of the structure. The central nave body walls have tilted approximately 2 degrees on both sides. Cracks and material losses in joints have been observed in most of the vaults, with material losses seen throughout the structure. Vertical cracks and joint gaps of approximately 10 mm have been identified in the walls below the windows of the narthex. Furthermore, a significant separation, approximately 2 m in length, has occurred at the corner connecting two walls of the chapel section. Stone elements on the exterior of the main body walls of the structure exhibit joint gaps, darkening, material deterioration, and consequent losses. This condition is also observed in the bases of both minarets. In this study, structural analysis using the SAP2000 v22 software was conducted through macro-modeling for modal analysis and linear analysis of Selimiye Mosque in Nicosia. While columns were modeled as frame elements, vaults and walls were modeled as shell elements. The numerical model considered a 2-degree rotation in the central nave body walls to reflect the observed rotation. Varying infill thicknesses on the upper cover were accounted for based on realistic calculations, representing different infill loads on corresponding regions. Modal analysis of the structure yielded 400 mode shapes and natural periods at the 95 % mass participation level, with the first modes occurring in the minarets. The initial modes in the main structure were found to occur in the delicate body walls supporting the heavy vaults in the central nave. Ambient measurements were conducted as part of the structural health monitoring system to obtain natural vibration modes of the structure. The frequencies corresponding to predicted mode shapes were compared with those observed in the finite element model, and modal updating was performed in significant areas where differences were identified, especially in the dynamic behavior of the central nave. The mosque is classified as a“Historical Structure of National Importance”in the“Guidelines for the Management of Earthquake Risks for Historical Buildings.”Therefore, the objective is to ensure a“Life Safety”level performance under the seismic effect of a 475-year return period earthquake (DD-2) with a 10 % probability of occurrence within 50 years. Accordingly, in the case of using the linear analysis approach, it is crucial to ensure that the design resistances of structural system elements are not exceeded under vertical loads and reduced seismic effects with Ra≤3. The seismicity of the region is determined through a site-specific seismic hazard analysis, resulting in a spectral acceleration coefficient of SS = 0.68 for a 475-year return period earthquake, S1 = 0.26 for a 1-second period, and the peak ground acceleration (PGA) = 0.29g. The soil characteristics of the region indicate a ZD soil class, with a safe bearing capacity of 374 kPa, a characteristic soil bearing capacity of 1122 kPa, and a design safe bearing capacity of 800 kPa. The maximum soil stress value obtained in the numerical model of the structure is 1050 kPa, which remains above the design safe bearing capacity but below the characteristic bearing capacity. The impact values obtained under vertical loads are lower than the capacity values, indicating that the structure is not currently experiencing overloading. However, stress and internal force values obtained under vertical loads and earthquake effects exceed the current resistances of the elements. The maximum E/K ratios, especially in the out-of-plane direction, under the seismic effect in the Y direction, are 4.80 for maximum horizontal bending moment (M11) and 3.18 for maximum vertical bending moment (M22). Additionally, the maximum horizontal bending moment E/K ratio on the upper cover is 1.83 under seismic effect in the X direction and 2.92 under seismic effect in the Y direction. As a result, the recommended intervention includes reducing the infills on the upper cover of the central nave and forming a compression strut-and-tie system to hold the body walls. After interventions, a significant decrease in stress and internal force values has been observed in the vaults and body walls compared to the current values. The maximum E/K ratios for maximum horizontal bending moment (M11) in the out-of-plane direction in the central nave body walls are 2.10, and for maximum vertical bending moment (M22), it is 1.24. Furthermore, the maximum bending moment ratio of the structure under seismic effects in the X direction has been found to be 1.62, while in the Y direction it is 1.54. To enhance the bending capacity of the vaults forming the upper cover of the structure and increase the in-plane sliding capacity of the lower body walls, the application of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plastering is recommended. For the walls in the chapel and bell tower sections showing separations and for overall structural improvement, steel anchoring applications are suggested. Additionally, in areas where cracks and deformations have occurred throughout the structure, especially due to the 2-degree rotations of the central nave body walls, grout injection is proposed to fill voids and improve wall integrity. Macro modeling, analysis, and recommendations presented are limited to the scope of the thesis and article research, while the ongoing restoration efforts on the structure rely upon distinct modeling, analyses, and interventions.
