Özet

This dissertation focuses on modelling and forecasting stock market volatility, particularly for the Turkish stock market, Borsa Istanbul 100 (BIST 100) index. Utilizing various models such as ARCH, GARCH, GARCH-M, TARCH, and EGARCH, the study aims to provide insights into the volatility dynamics. The dissertation is structured into several key sections: an introduction that emphasizes the significance of financial market volatility for asset pricing, strategic asset allocation, and risk management; a comprehensive literature review that discusses previous studies on financial time series and volatility modeling; an empirical framework and data description that detail the methodology and data characteristics; and a thorough empirical analysis that evaluates the forecasting performance of different GARCH models using MAE and RMSE error statistics. The findings of the study indicate that while no single model consistently outperforms others, the GARCH family models, especially the asymmetric models namely TARCH and EGARCH, are effective in capturing the volatility characteristics of the BIST 100 index. The study concludes with a discussion on the implications of these findings for investors and policymakers, highlighting the importance of accurate volatility forecasts for making informed investment decisions in uncertain market conditions.
