GO/ZrO₂/epoksi hibrit kompoziti en yüksek mikrosertlik değerlerini göstermiştir.
This study aims to fabricate an epoxy/zirconium oxide nanocomposite with enhanced corrosion inhibition properties and test its ability to extend the alloy's life. The efficiency of the nanocomposite in inhibiting corrosion on steel alloys is then evaluated through electrochemical tests. The structural properties of the nanocomposite, its shapes, and its constituent chemicals are further investigated to understand how they behave as corrosion inhibitors. This study focused on the performance of epoxy-based composite coatings reinforced with zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) nanoparticles and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. The primary objective was to evaluate the thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical properties of these nanocomposite coatings, which were designed to offer superior protection in harsh environments. Various advanced techniques were employed to characterize the coatings, including thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), microhardness testing, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These methods provided valuable insights into the structure, chemical interactions, and performance of the coatings. The incorporation of zirconium oxide (ZrO₂) and graphene oxide (GO) into the epoxy matrix was facilitated. To achieve even distribution of the nanoparticles, a combination of ultrasonic diffusion, mechanical stirring, and spin coating techniques was employed. This careful preparation ensured optimal dispersion, which is crucial for achieving consistent performance in the final coatings. SEM images confirmed the uniform distribution of ZrO₂ nanoparticles, which were spherical in shape and welldispersed within the epoxy matrix. The addition of GO further enhanced the coating's surface features, showing crumpled and layered structures that suggested successful interaction between GO and ZrO₂, thereby improving the overall barrier properties of the coating. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed significant improvements in the thermal stability of the composite coatings compared to pure epoxy. While pure epoxy showed a mass loss of approximately 97% during thermal degradation, the ZrO₂/epoxy and GO/ZrO₂/epoxy composites displayed a more stable thermal profile, with residual masses of 5.6% and 6.8% at 800°C, respectively. These findings suggest that the incorporation of ZrO₂ and GO enhances the thermal stability of the epoxy matrix, making it more resilient to high temperatures. Mechanical testing via microhardness evaluations demonstrated a significant increase in hardness with the inclusion of ZrO₂ and GO in the epoxy coatings. The GO/ZrO₂/epoxy hybrid composite showed the highest microhardness, indicating that the combination of ZrO₂'s mechanical reinforcement and GO's properties contributed to improved load-bearing capacity and wear resistance. This enhancement in mechanical strength is essential for applications where the coating must endure significant stress and abrasion. Electrochemical corrosion tests, including potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), assessed the coatings' ability to resist degradation in corrosive environments. Uncoated steel exhibited severe corrosion with a high corrosion current density (Icorr) of 18,500 nA/cm² and a corrosion rate of 898.93 mpy. In contrast, the epoxy-based coatings, particularly the ZrO₂/epoxy and GO/ZrO₂/epoxy composites, demonstrated much improved corrosion resistance. Among these, the GO/ZrO₂/epoxy hybrid provided the best protection, with an Icorr of 16.8 nA/cm² and a corrosion rate of 0.81 mpy, due to the dual-action barrier effects of GO's impermeable structure and ZrO₂'s mechanical reinforcement. After 72 hours of exposure to a corrosive environment, the GO/ZrO₂/epoxy composite maintained a low corrosion current density of 24.7 nA/cm² and a corrosion rate of 1.26 mpy, confirming its long-term protective capability. In conclusion, the study highlights the significant improvements achieved by incorporating ZrO₂ nanoparticles and GO nanosheets into epoxy coatings. These enhancements, which include improved thermal stability, mechanical strength, and corrosion resistance, make the GO/ZrO₂/epoxy hybrid composite a promising candidate for protective coatings in demanding applications. The results underline the importance of nanofillers in enhancing the properties of polymer-based coatings, particularly in environments where durability and resistance to corrosion are critical.
