ABSTRACT This study has been carried out to determine the university students' and teachers' attitudes towards translation as a pedagogic tool and as a goal in FLT departments and the problems in the teaching of translation as a goal in these departments, introductory chapter in which assumptions about the present study are made attempts to give the background to the study as well as the aim and the scope. The first chapter provides the definitions of translation and a brief summary of the historical development of the translation in Europe and Turkey and the contribution of key figures. The second chapter discusses the theoretical problems in translation with reference to the concept of equivalence which is dealt with under three subtitles: (i) linguistic, (ii) pragmatic and (iii) experiential equivalence. The third chapter is devoted to the discussion of translation as a science and its relation to other scientific disciplines like linguistics and its subdisciplines and computer science. The fourth chapter includes the results of the research and the discussion of the problems encountered in the teaching of translation as a goal in FLT departments and the university students ' and teachers * attitudes towards translation as a goal and as a pedagogic device, based on the data obtained from the quest ionaires and the survey. In this chapter some suggestions about the solution of the problems are also made. The fifth chapter is devoted to devising some translation exercises that can be used by foreign language teachers to help learners acquire the translation skill which is as important as other communicative skills and as communicative as these skills; developing new methods, approaches and techniques to make translation courses more effective and efficient; discussing the problems in translating various types of the texts; and finally offering an analytic approach to the evaluation of the translation skill. The sixth chapterincludes a brief summary of the study and concluding remarks. The appendices contain the student and teacher-questionaires and the survey. 11
