The lexical frequency profile (LFP) developed by Laufer and Nation (1995) is a measurement tool of vocabulary richness in second language English writing. The tool uses the distribution of word type based on frequency of use statistics to measure richness. Learners who use a higher proportion from the low frequency lists are assumed to have richer vocabulary knowledge. The measure has generally been well-received but some researchers, particularly Meara (2005), have questioned its validity and reliability. The thesis is a meta-analysis of studies that have used the LFP. The study examines LFP reliability (consistency), its predictive validity as a measure of proficiency and academic performance and its correlation with other vocabulary tests as reported in the applied linguistics literature. The meta-analysis research approach focuses on effect sizes of the studies' findings as a central measure of instrument sensitivity. The study found that the LFP is a relatively sensitive measure of vocabulary richness across the studies examined. It also produces a reasonably consistent profile across texts written by same person. The language proficiency level can also be roughly discriminated by the use of the tool. The measure predicts overall academic performance and its results correlate with the other vocabulary measures. The findings support the idea that the LFP can be a useful tool to measure vocabulary knowledge but one that has some limitations.
