Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı; eğitim dili İngilizce olan yabancı dil sınıfların da dil geçişleri ile alakalı öğrencilerin ve öğretmenlerin algılarını ve tutumlarını ortaya çıkarmaktır. Ek olarak, hem öğrenme hem de öğretme ortamın da dil geçiş fonksiyonlarından ve ayrıca öğretmen ve öğrencilerin dil geçişlerini aynı amaçlar için kullanıp kullanmadıkların da bahsedilmektedir. Çalışma Türkiye' nin batısında eğitim veren üç devlet üniversitesinde ki hazırlık sınıfları arasından gönüllü olan yaş, düzey, öğrenme yıllı ve cinsiyetine göre farklılık gösteren 550 öğrencinin katılımı ve cinsiyeti, uyruğu, öğretme tecrübesine göre çeşitlilik gösteren 50 öğretmenin katılımı ile gerçekleşmiştir. Öğrencilerin ve öğretmenlerin dil geçişlerine ilişkin görüşleri ve metoda yönelik kullanımlarına karşı tutumları araştırılmıştır. Öğrencilere verilen anket ile nicel veriler toplanmış, betimleyici ve CHAID analizleriyle incelenmiştir. Nitel veriler ise kayıt altına alınan öğretmenlerle yüz yüze yapılan mülakatlar yoluyla toplanmış, tümdengelim yöntemleri ile analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar mevcut literatür göz önünde tutularak tartışılmış ve buna göre önerilerde bulunulmuştur.

The purpose of this study is to shed light on the perceptions of the teachers and the students towards the use of code switching in EFL classrooms where English was a medium of instruction. Besides, it even mentioned about the functions of code-switching in the learning and teaching environment. The research was taken place at three state universities in the western part of Turkey and the participants of the students were volunteer university students (N=550) diversified according to their gender, English proficiency level, English learning year and age. Moreover, English instructors (N=50) who volunteered to participated in the study and the participants varied depending on their gender, nationality and teaching experience. Questionnaires were distributed to the students for the quantitative part of the research and analysed by CHIAD analysis as well as descriptive analysis. Interview questions were asked to the teachers and the answers were investigated for the qualitative part of the research and teachers' recorded semi-structured interview responses were processed deductively. The results are discussed and some suggestions are given with respect to the present literature.
